    First dive into koi

Hello, I am Ash! I used to keep marine but after a mishap about 6 years ago I gave up that hobby, at the start of covid I built a small raised pond to keep a few shubunkin (I have had 6 in there for a few years now)

Just moved house and decided I want to upgrade, so I’ve started making a raised timber pond with a bottom drain.

I am in need of a bit of direction with regards to how to set up my filter as I cannot find anything online despite searching for so long

I picked up a 3 bay fibreglass filter, kockney koi I think by the look of it! I plan on putting brushes in bay one, moving bed with k1 in bay two and jap matting in bay three.

    My questions are….
The filters inlet and outlet are high on the filter, with it being fed by bottom drain do I want it lower on the inlet.

Also the baffles have been set up from bay one to two at the top, and bottom from bay two to three, do I need to change this or will it work! If I can figure out how to post a picture I will, or a diagram lol.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

    Regards
    Ash

with regards to posting pics, at the bottom of the thread you will see manage attachments, hit that and you can upload pics from there.

Thanks for the response, the inlet is 50mm and outlet is 60mm . I have not made anything yet. I want to get everything together before I start the build

Not sure if you’re filter is a kockney koi filter as I think they have a 110mm inlet (gravity fed) or a 110mm outlet (pump fed) as far as I’m aware, in any case I think the filter you have is setup as a pump fed filter unless you’re planning to install a 50mm bottom drain.
What size pond are you planning to build.

Would agree on the 110mm inlet or out , but looking at that sealant bodge job looks very rough i do wonder if you removed that flange connector would it be a 110mm underneath ??

Any on advice on where or how to set up this filter, from a bottom drain?

Undecided on pond size yet, likely a 2.4mx2mx1.2m as that would be logical for the area I want it. Although I could go bigger and put it elsewhere in the garden!

Like I said I haven’t built the pond yet but was given the filter and would rather save money where the can, any advice would be welcome! I agree if I rip the sealant bodge job it would likely be bigger, I am away (in the forces) until next weekend so can’t look until then!

Multibay filters can work really well but if your in the forces ( thank you ) they are very maintenance heavy a lot of work all the time if there is any chance of getting a second hand drum to put in front and use the mb as a bio chamber it'll make you life so much easier when you both home and away . Auto clean stick a Auto top up on Auto feeder then it's just some one to check in and make sure it's all working couple times a week or what ever . But that's all personal life and not really what you've ask so I apologise.

On your diagram I think if I remember mine correctly your inlet/out let is the wrong way round . But also think there is a lot missing your inlet chamber inlet is high but so is your flow to the next chamber unless am missing things here your water is going to flow straight over any media in there and straight in to chamber 2 taking all the crap with it the water must flow either up though media or down though it not over the top as that is pictured

Get home get some pictures of any other things you have laying around for it , take the Sealant off and have a look . In my old one I didn't like the set up the layout was wrong for my pond a I just used a bore bit to add a second 110mm inlet there is plenty that can be done

Thanks to everyone so far for your input,

Filter mk2 is planned, just want to know if there are any glaring issues before I start putting it together this weekend.

    filter 2.png
bottom drain feeds filter, goes through brushes, then to moving k1, jap matting in last bay, through uv then pumped back in via dry side pump.

    Should be fine.
Just remember that your gravity flow is limited to the narrowest point, so you'll benefit from 110mm /4" from the bottom drain, all the way to the filter. Pump side will be fine at a narrower diameter because the pump will pull/push the water through.

The filter water height needs to be set at the same height of the water in the pond. It will drop slightly when you turn the pump on and that will be your running height. If you can't drag enough water from your gravity side it will empty the filter.

It looks like that filter is currently set up to be pump fed, so you will need to change the inlet to 110mm to make sure it works well.
