Thread: My Pond

Some Pictures during Construction and what it looks like now - 4900 Gallons. The Cut off corner allows good viewing from Patio.

After extensive research on Koi Forum and struggling to find a pond builder, it was designed using Sketch up and built with the help of a local builder. I had some help doing the 4 inch pressure pipe runs into the filter house. I did the Insulation myself and all the 2 inch pipe runs both outside and inside the filter house. I used a contractor for the fibre glassing who did a great job in a day and a half. We started in April and was filled up and stocked by August. I went through NPS without any losses. I lost a Yamabuki Ogon to a heron strike last year. It was probably my favourite fish. I found the fish dead on my lawn. Clearly too big to swallow. All my net structures are now cable tied down and I have had no repeat visits. I have had a Koi pond before pre internet but the Koi Forum made my dream Pond much more achievable.

Shame about the net cover, but totally understandable though.
Have you considered putting up a pergola and maybe installing a jump guard around the pond to stop the herons.
I think it would look a lot better than a net considering all the hard work you’ve put into the pond.

I did look at jump guards and pergolas but after watching you tube videos of herons I'm not convinced it would be effective.
My pond is on the north side of my house so only gets morning sun and shade is not really an issue. I can remove the front section of netting to hand feed and clean the window. Before I cable tied the four sections together I could take the nets off in 5 minutes. I mostly watch the fish through the window so the nets are not too obtrusive. It's a bummer but herons have to eat too. In my first in ground pond I got cleaned out by herons over winter. I deployed an electric fence that seemed to work. Next doors cat had a look at it touched his nose on the wire, did a backward somersault and never went near the pond ever again. The fence looked ugly too so I dont think there is a magic solution to the problem.

Very nice set up Coyboy, sure it brings pleasure now all the hard work is done!

I’ve got one off those over my waterfall to stop the pigeons using the waterfall as their own private spar.
Works really well, the only thing is you can’t use it in the winter when the temp is below zero.

I'm on a corner plot so lots of landing opportunities for herons I would have to put at least two water squirters with all the hose pipe runs. I dont fancy digging up my patio again. I went through loads of pond builds and considered different heron detergents before the build and the net was the least worse option.
