    New member with a question

Hi everyone, I'm a new member from Scotland.
I've been keeping pond fish for many years and in the last few years I've started keeping Koi. Last year I built myself a new Koi pond with two windows that holds 1400 gallons.
I want to build a diy moving bed filter, can anyone help my with size, volume quantity of media etc?
    Thanks.

what filtration are you currently running?

    Hi, thank for the reply.
At the moment I have a home made bog filter and a home made shower. Both work well at the moment but I only have 5 koi. One is approx 14" and the others are approx 8".
I would like to add more later this year, but not until my filter system is better.

What are your water parameters at present? As you introduce more fish and your current one's develop, keeping on top of the water quality is paramount. As you are looking to home build, won't it also be down to aesthetics and what space you have to incorporate a moving bed? Bigger is better for sure..as is, something, regardless of size, is better than nothing..

Water parameters are good at the moment. I regularly check using NT labs test kit. My wife has allocated me an area of the garden approx 4ft x 6ft. I intend to build a weather proof box around whatever I build.
The bog filter keeps the water clear but is difficult to clean.
I understand that I cannot increase the qty of fish without improving the filter system. I was thinking of 3 x 120ltr barrels, one static and 2 moving bed feeding into my shower.

Sounds like you already have it mapped out.. you can increase the amount of media needed, as both your knowledge and your fish grow. That'll probably help out, with the overall build costs too ..

I was looking for advice on how much media I would need and what the minimum volume of water should the filter. Then I'll decide on 3 x barrels or one large box.
I don't mind any types of advice I get, I've learnt all I know from the Internet. It's good to talk to people with 'hands on ' experience.

Amount of media is totally dictated by the amount of food you want to feed. 50 litres of K1 is good for 250 grams per day, 50 grams of K1 micro 450 grams (research this as I’ve quoted from memory)

I guess it’s always good to over filter. Personally, given the size of your pond I’d be happy with 100 litres of K1 micro.

Thanks for that, I'll keep that in mind.

Oase PondPads offer a huge biological settlement surface area and are capable of breaking down fish waste at the feeding rate of up to 215g of fish food per 10 litres of Pond Pads, every 24 hours.

Once you've decided on how much media you want, then when it comes to deciding on a suitable tank, ideally your moving bed filter contains at least double the volume of water to media. E.g. If you want 100l of k1 then the moving bed should have at least 200l of water in.

Remember, it won't be filled right to the top, plus the draw of a pump may drop the water level more, so include that deduction to get the real/working volume of the tank.

I emphasise the words 'at least', as you probably want a bit more than double the water, to ensure there is enough water and space for the media to move in.

I'd say 100 - 150l of k1 media for your set up is ample. Bear in mind that if you oversize the tank, you can always add more k1 later on if you end up overstocked.

I've built a DIY moving bed and I'd say just go for one larger tank, rather than a few smaller tanks.

I only say this as it'll involve less fittings e.g. tank connectors, media meshes etc... less points of failure/leaking and less time to build. Plus it should have a smaller footprint than multiple smaller tanks. It should also reduce the amount of airlines and air stones coming from the air pump.

I would recommend adding a purge valve at the bottom of the tank too.

That way if any crud builds up in the base of the moving bed, you can drain off some water which should remove the worst of it. It's much better than having to fish out the media with a net, disconnect the pipe fittings, draining down the old tank to clean it then getting it all back in place.

Thank you for the information. This is what I'm looking for. When I come to build my new filter this will be great.

    Thanks to everyone that replied.
