    New member here

    Hello,
I'm new to the forum but I have been a koi keeper since the mid 1980's which is when I built my 15000 gallon rectangular raised pond.
With energy costs now spiralling, I have made the decision to save money on my energy bills and unfortunately, today I have switched off the power to my pond pump and UV sterilizer.
Over the years I have enjoyed raising young koi to adulthood, but I haven't introduced any new koi for the last 20 years and I currently only have three large ones remaining.
They are all around 20 years old (Tancho Kohaku, Asagi, and a Sanke). There are also 7 goldfish which are between 3 and 8 years old.
My favourite koi was an orange Ogon which sadly died last year aged 36 years old (probably of old age). The three remaining koi and goldfish all appear to be in good health.
The pond is rendered but it has started to leak slightly, but I'm surprised and happy that it has served me well this long with minimal maintenance.
However, I'm not getting any younger and this seems to be as good a time as any to get rid of the pond and utilise the garden space for growing plants instead.

So now I'm left with the task of draining the pond, knocking down the pond walls above ground level, and filling in the space with rubble and then top soil.
But first I need to remove the fish and dispose of them humanely. I'd prefer to find them good free homes to go to, but I have no way of transporting them to another location.
I also plan on selling the filter (Evolution Aqua Eazypod), submersible pump and UV sterilizer.

If anyone is interested in any of the above items, please let me know. I live in Teesside and collection will be required.

    Welcome pal,

I’m pretty sure if you posted a few pics their would be someone willing to collect your fish rather than having to think of killing them ?

Am in Durham and maybe be interested in a koi or 2 as my stock levels would be far to high to take all goldfish and the lot ect. . if you can get some pictures up ?

    Hi Johnathan,
It's a co-incidence that you live in Durham, because yesterday my son's girlfriend has told me that she has an uncle who lives in the Durham area who keeps koi carp and she is going to enquire if he is interested in having all three koi. I've told her that I want to ensure that they go to a good home and that means an experienced pondkeeper with a large pond which is well filtered and not overstocked. I also said that they would need to be collected in appropriate plastic transport bags. I'm waiting for him or her to come back to me,but I will let you know the outcome as soon as I have it.
I'm still happy to provide photos of the koi but unfortunately the water is not very clear at the moment therefore I cannot get good photos, and I don't want to stress them by trying to net and remove them. I've also got a painful back at the moment which which makes this difficult and I'll have to drain some water from the pond when they do finally come out.
However, here are some photos that were taken 6 years ago when the water was clearer. They're obviously much bigger now but at least you'll have some idea what they look like. They were bought as two year olds from Teesside Koi and I believe that they were imported from the Aokiya Koi Farm in Niigata, Japan.
I'm going to advertise the used pond equipment for sale on another thread. This includes a Hailea S12000 submersible pump, aeration dome, TMC Pond Clear Advantage UV25 sterilizer, Evolution Aqua Eazypod (grey) including mature K1 media, Evolution Aqua airtech AT40E air pump with 6 way outlet adapter (used only for cleaning the Eazypod). Although the power is now turned off, this system is still connected and in situ (see photos) and would be ideal for anyone to transfer to a new build indoor or outdoor pond. I would also be happy to include the hoses and airlines.

Thanks Mwesty1. I've now posted pics of the three koi and the equipment that I will be advertising for sale on another thread.
I'd hate having to kill the fish and it would only be as a last resort if I don't find good homes for them all.
The pond pump and UV are now switched off, but I won't be dismantling the pond until next spring at the earliest, so hopefully someone will take the fish by then if they survive the winter without filtration.

    Hi Johnathan,
The uncle is coming to view the three koi on Friday and he will then decide if he wants any or all of them. Apparently, he is an experienced koi keeper who has a large pond with 30 koi,
but I won't let him take any of them unless I'm satisfied that his set up can accommodate them comfortably.
It's good to know that you would be able to provide a good home for one or two of them if necessary, and I'll update you again on Friday.

He tried but had to turn back at Peterlee due to bad weather. It's now going to be one day next week.

    Hi Johnathan,

The Asagi and Tancho Kohaku have both gone this morning, but I've still got the Sanke if you want it?
It's in good health but it's very big and will need a large container for transport. The bags that the uncle brought were too small.
Here's a photo of it taken yesterday. The filter is now turned off so it needs to go asap.310935039_481458174010673_3100654609358251956_n.jpg

Just to confirm that all three fish were successfully re-housed by mid-October 2022.

Wow, that is a lot to take on. It sounds like you've had a lot of success with your pond and the fish, and now you are ready to move on. It's great that you want to find good homes for your remaining fish. Maybe you could post a notice on the forum to connect with local koi enthusiasts who could help you out? Good luck with the transition and hope you find the best home for your fish.
