pond netting
How many members fully net their pond please ?
I,m always more concerned about any jumpers than a heron visit as i can sort that with a perimeter net ..
Fed up of looking through a net at my koi and sturgeon , thinking of taking it off .
any pics of your netted ponds or jump guards would be appreciated .
Thanks

I have to fully net my 1000gallon circular raised pond as I have lost 4 bigger jumpers who even managed to get through the net above the skimmer or over the side after some heavy rain. I think they were actually after food trapped in the net so acrylic side guards on the to do list. I also have a persistent heron with his eye on easy pickings & a fox that walks along copings of 6 foot high walls to hunt for food. With my new 3500 gallon rectangular pond I am thinking of jump guards / netting or even a polycarbonate cover that could lower from the pergola roof on motorised cables. As this pond also has two windows for additional viewing. Still undecided myself

Rising roof sounds mint like. Hope there a new pond build thread with it.
I haven't netted my pond and touch every thing the only jumper I had was a new one that was in a bowl getting acclimatise
Think I would add jump guards if they start any of that like

I am not the first to think of a motorised cover , I actually borrowed the idea from Northern Koi Keeper on you tube https://youtu.be/uwWqgpitoGQ

Northern Koi Keeper has inspired me to have a go at making a cover like that myself. Just finishing the pipework at the moment but It looks do-able to me.

I'm new here, so "hello" to everyone. We decided not to net or use floating grids, but instead opted for a raised fence (7') and then designed a mixture of different sized holes made out of fishing line so as to stop birds like Herons but allow small 'normal' garden birds to come and go as they please without harming them. Initially while we tried out differing shapes and routes for the line we lost a couple of our boys, but that has all been sorted and the likes of herons can only look on and gloat. We did the other day have an incident with a Magpie and Joseph (the Koi) was injured above the eye but is recovering. A little surgery tomorrow will sort him out.
The fishing line is stapled to the top of the high fence and hardly anyone notices it except the birds, squirrels etc. We used 60lb line which is quite thick but you have to 'look' to see it's there. The photo is the first design. Since then it has got much more complex. We've had to take into account not only bird sizes (including flapping wings) but also their habits of landing and take off and where. Birds we found are most definitely creatures of habit

I have nets on stock vats to prevent predators and jumpers.
On my show pond (raised with sheer sides) have 1ft wrought iron guards to prove t the heron easily reaching the pond. He’s turned up a few times that I know of but been unsuccessful
Cheers

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
