Nice to hear someone else building a new pond, if there have been any positives from Covid and Lockdown surely they include Koi keeping appears to be in fashion again! Nice one!
there are alot of different drums available and everyone will have their favourite.
stating the obvious the first consideration is the volume of your pond and making sure you have a filter large enough not just to cope with its initial size and stocking level but for future growth - you will likely add more koi in the future and your koi will also grow (hopefully) creating an increasing amount of waste and ammonia to be processed - biological capability and ability to expand it easily is most important here assuming you overspec the drum (for you pond size - high flow rate vs size) when you first buy it.
You can buy standalone drums with no inbuilt (typically floating bed media like k1, Hel X etc) biological filter or “combi drums” which include a biological section. You can also add a “bakki” shower after your drum as the only biological filtration or in addition to floating bed media.
whichever filter you buy I strongly recommend you include a drum in your setup as it will really simplify maintenance and slash the time you spend having to clean filters. It will also obviously keep your pond really clean (assuming good design and bottom drain layout) limiting strain on your bio filters from degrading waste unnecessarily sat on the bottom etc. Nexus’ are biologically excellent but they do tend to let alot of “fines” through, disappointing if you want crystal clear water and youve spend a lot of blood, sweat, tears and money on your new build.
You have many choices and predictably your decision comes down cost, space, build complexity, ease of maintenance and personal preference. Before you buy anything make sure you visit as many koi dealers and working ponds to see drums in action.
I like Oase Proficlear as Ive used them for 6+ years and found them very reliable with excellent warranty backup when something has (rarely gone wrong). They are perhaps not the cheapest but for me the reliability makes up for that.
they come with everything you need for the drum to work straight out of the box (including the rinse pump) and the Compact range is basically “plug and play”. The Oase drums can also be monitored anywhere in the world through the Oase cloud, helpful if youre on holiday etc (you need to buy an additional control to do this).
One downside is that you cannot just drop a submersible UV into the Oase units are they arent UV stable and will degrade.
I hope this is helpful and no doubt other members will add their thoughts...
Good luck!
