Hi Marty
the name is Wain
nanasai is relation to number of posts ranking as you see on yours it says Fry as you post this will change as will marker underneath
what filtration do you have as thinking that you need to establish/mature the filter
this can be done with fish or buy the bio balls etc to start the process
some use carp or goldfish to mature however you then have the issue what to do with them
as dependant on size/age/cost introducing Koi may not be right choice
we are here to help and for you to ask this questions
PS are you a scaffolder ?? . . I wont tell if you dont1000 gal

Hi Martyn
Cycling the pond without fish unfortunately won't do anything other than burn electric and cost you money. A pond filter is home for the bacteria and they need food mainly the ammonia from the fishes gills and fish waste. You also get a bio film on the pond walls and the pipes ect. There is a chance you will experience new pond syndrome as the fish create waste and the bacteria grow, This is where regular water checks and water changes are important at the start when fish are introduced. The dreaded blanket weed or green water is all a sign that things are developing. The use of a UV will help to prevent the water going pea green. The biggest mistake people make is too many fish too soon and too much feeding. Do your research on here before the first fish goes in and take it steady. A filter /pond can take a couple of years to mature and good luck with your new hobby that will take up may hours of your time

KEVT so i already have a uv built in to my pump which will prevent the green stuff and am going to put in 4 small 6cm koi to start with,i have water test kits at the ready have also got 3 in 1 fish disease prevention and pond guardian salt tonic i bought these when i bought the pumps there are probably lots more fish protection i will need at some point,is there a healthy bacteria that can be bought to add to the pond? to give it a kick start

This is a big debate - some swear by these pond bacteria additives and some like myself would rather supply the fish with good clean fresh water and ST to dechlorinate the tap water. Keeping your pond clean and filters cleaned often will mean the fish will look after themselves. It's not recommended to treat your fish unless you know exactly what you are treating and if the fish don't need treating leave the chemicals alone unlit required. There is a saying - we don't keep fish we keep water and if the water is perfect the fish look after themselves. I try to feed my fish the same amount of food each day during the summer when they are active and this allows the bacteria / waste to balance out - they are always hungry, but as I say we are looking to keep a balanced system. Fish in lakes have loads of water and their waste is not a real problem, in a pond we don't have that luxury and have to keep an eye on conditions. The nitrogen cycle is what happens in our ponds and the end result is a plant food if everything is working. We can handle this by washing it away with regular water changes - again most important thing is Sodium Thiosulphate to remove the chemicals that the water companies put in to keep us safe, but are very bad for our fish (you can find dose rates on here for ST) I believe it's very safe to use and cheap as chips on Ebay £5 will last you years rather than buying water treatment that works out very expensive

Hello and welcome Martyn.
Love your pond and think you have done a fantastic job there looks great and very relaxing.
As said above get some sodium thiosulphate to dechlorinate the water, you can buy bacteria to put in the filter but dont really know if it works.
I would get four small koi to start about 4 to 6 ins and get some 3mm food to feed very sparingly.
Maybe better to wait till April when it warms up a bit plenty of suppliers up your way,I have 150 small ones to move on soon.
How did you do the koi painting on the side of your pond?John
