New member, new pond, all advice welcome
Hi I’m mark,
I live in Poole, Dorset, once the rest of my garden is finished I’m going to build myself a pond, Im very new to this, but had a passion for fish for as long as I can remember. I have been doing as much reading and research as I can but any advice from you guys would be much appreciated, where some of you may have gone wrong 1st time round. the size I’m looking at is around 3m x 2-2.5m and 5 foot deep, 3 foot below ground and 2 foot above (with a window), I know the setups can be expensive, so any advice on the setup for this size pond etc, hope you are all well, look forward to hearing from you. Mark.

Welcome to the forum Mark, you sure have found the right place for advise, for me I would suggest start at working out your Budget and the space available, ALWAYS have a large contingency for pipework as it can go mega expensive, I thought I had mine all worked out but think I spent double what I had estimated

Hi dbs, I do have a decent amount of space, enough space for all the equipment and the pond it’s self. I have been looking at costs etc, I have friends in all different trades, so that will keep the build cost down, I’d be happy to spend around, I know there’s different makes and models that will do the job, but with different costs, I’m not 1 to buy the cheapest 1 available because you end up buying twice, some looking for stuff in the middle, obviously I don’t know how much you and the other guys have spent on your ponds, if I was to say around 5k I would be happy to spend, do you think that would be In the ball park?

I know what your saying ajm, it was like that when I had the bar built, that’s why I’m getting the rest of the garden done 1st, so when I do go majorly over budget, I don’t have motor mouth indoors giving me ear ache.

How are you lineing the pond. Fiberglass is best but not cheap unless you do it your self last time I looked it was some it like 35 quid per m2 . Personally I would up the 5k if possible. Some of these drums are 2k 250 for a spin drifter bottom drain 80/100 for each good double union ball valve. A biki shower and the media if running one. Few going for ea pumps around 250

The best thing you can have when building a pond is a pocket full of wife receipts. And maybe a new handbag/shoes if some it go's completely tits up lol

Welcome to the forum Mark.
You might want to check out Freddyboy's pond build thread. Unfortunately he died a short while ago bless him but his thread is very good. It's just been made a sticky thread in the pond build section to honour his memory.

Welcome to the forum , Mark . Looking forward to seeing how your project develops .
Dont forget to keep us all entertained with photos of your progress . It also helps us to offer better advice , if we can see whats going on .
I think 5k is a reasonable ball park estimate - if you can do most of the work yourself . The main thing is to get as much info as you can before you start , so your happy with the end result . Most of us end up building 2 or 3 ponds , because the original build isnt quite right - which gets expensive .
Your biggest costs will probably be your fibre glassing - around £1500 ish , and a similar price for an entry level drum . I think the vast majority of us who`ve been at this for a while have come to the conclusion that drums are the way to go for mechanical filtration .
You`ll also need bio filtration and I`d also include an aerated bottom drain , skimmer and a trickle in /out system .
Hmm - thinking about it - your remaining 2k will get eaten up pretty quick , but you can save a bit if you shop around , and , as I said, do most of the build yourself .
Good luck , and keep us informed !Colin

Welcome to the forum Marky.
I run a small business and have supplied many forums members with equipment, food, treatments and koi over the last 12 months.
I would be very happy to assist (and can issue a ‘wife receipt’ if that helps
Additionally always happy to chat and offer my advice / opinions.
Cheers
