You’re asking a question without defining the aims.
First things first, pond volume and turnover rate you’re after. This dictates what filter options you need to look at.
how many bottom drains and how many skimmers, with what pipe diameter?
Really in today’s world if you are prepared to make the extra investment necessary to have things work mostly automatically, then a drum filter has to be king for mechanical. You need a mains supply to the pond for top ups and a built in overflow somewhere in the system.
The bio filter though is a much more personal choice. If you want a fast turnover rate and high stocking then a shower will be good. If you are worried about appearance and noise then you may decide to put that inside your filter house. But you would need to design your pond returns for that eventuality as you would need at least one 4” underwater return.
Moving bed filters are also low maintenance if well designed.
Anoxic if you want to do the bio on a budget and you’re into science and cat litter
Well designed jap mat cartridge type bio filters can also be good.
Some of us decide not to put all our eggs in one basket and have more than one bio filter! If your filter house is small then you might not be able to do that though.
You also need to consider heating, which circuit you’re going to put your UV in, and whether to run your skimmer line on a different pump. There are too many variables to just suggest a one-size-fits-all solution.2016 new 6000 gallon pond
