Demoralised and confused.
Hi I am Dave from the Midlands, Used to be on the Koi Mag forum and have noticed its no longer live. Built a DIY Nexus Slixus??
Forget what they called it, but it worked.
Over the last 2 years I have been losing fish. Could not find out why. All seemed healthy then I would find another one floating.
Found nothing from scrapes. A pale one seemed OK one day then 2 days later floating and rather red. Always just after Xmas.
When losing them it demoralised me. Pond sat with just the pump running and no air, started going green so have starting
to add some PP which is where I will end my introduction here and ask more in the correct section.
Thanks Dave.

Thanks, the wife wants me to give up and fill it in. Filters needed moving as the flies in the summer were a nuisance.
I have a few health issues where that would be slow and painful, so only want to do it once but she is worried it
will make me worse.
The koi were nothing special, bought from New Forest in early 2007 as 1" - 2" and they had got to a decent size.
It was enjoyable watching them grow. Although they were not that large it suited my pond size.
Did think about getting some goldfish or similar but it seems koi can be purchased for less if you start small.
This is what I am confused about and forgot to mention that in the original post. The problem is what to do with an 8ft square hole
2ft is above ground using sleepers the rest below ground. The liner is 13 years old 1mm or 1.2mm firestone?
Will that need replacing to last another xx years?
Thanks again.

Sorry to hear about the health issue mate.
Personally if the liner is 13YO I would take the opportunity to replace it as that way the new one should last for another +13years and you won’t have to worry about it.
Not a sales pitch mate as I don’t get involved with liners are they are too much hassle, more best advice whilst the time is right for you to future proof your hard efforts and give the new set up longevity.
Happy to help however I can though.
Cheers

The new liner will be another point on her list of shutting it down now.
Absolutely mention these things because it must be a do it all now otherwise she will whinge for years...
She blames my condition on working on cars out in all weathers and got rather protective, explained that filling it
in will be a big job also.
Not a simple case of cutting the sleepers and pushing them into the hole and burying them, there is a concrete collar
under those sleepers because the garden was not level. Not huge but that is not something i can break up.
She didn't like the idea of burying the sleepers and i worked out how many tons of soil it would take to fill it in
she went quiet. Shhh i worked it out on the full pond size not just the bit below ground..
Whats change in the past 13 years of Koi keeping? Koi Mag gone i see. I went to log into the forum and its
some sport/gym site?
Anything better in filters and koi health?
Thanks.

Everyone needs their ‘happy hobby’ IMHO. As we all know this is the greatest hobby when this are going well, but it’s a constant challenge to keep that happiness running.
Always difficult when things are going wrong but it’s us vs ‘nature’ in conquering things we rarely fully understand (unless you’re Manky Sanke of course). That to me is what keeps it from getting boring, however that is what keeps it expensive at times.

Sorry for the late reply, having a good think whats next. Waters crystal clear now... Looks enticing except its raining. Manky Sanky, flowing river filter or am I thinking of someone else? Thanks.

Maybe you are thinking of Peter Waddington's '' Endless river filtration systems for koi ponds '' Eric for short.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
