Hi Guys - Oxfordshire
Hi all. New to koi. Lots of thoughts and even more questions on the setup I’m going to build. Going for the contemporary look. Would be great to chat and visit some of your ponds.

Welcome Dr Andrew.
I am based in Headington Oxford you will likely not get many ideas from my pond filtration is great but the pond itself is small and uninspiring.
You will get lots of great advise on here

Ditto Andrew, I've just moved to Didcot area, looking to build a large contemporary pond with decking. Looking for ideas. I have transported my Koi from my previous house and are in temp accommodation.

Welcome
Contemporary is the kind of look I went with in 2017 when I did a whole garden refurb. I've learned an awful lot since then... mostly because I wasn't part of this forum before the build! Happy to share my mistakes with you so you can avoid them

Thank you I came up with the design and did all the 2D plans and 3D renders using a great bit of free software called SweetHome 3D.
The pond was part of a whole garden refurb for both my home, and my mum who lives next door - which was very convenient as we needed some pretty big diggers which had to come down between the houses so we had to rip all the fencing down! By the time I got around to redesigning the garden, we'd live here for about 6 years so I'd gotten a good feel for the sunny spots and how I wanted to use the garden. We had also done an extension to the house to turn one of the back bedrooms into a much larger room with balcony doors because my health is a bit iffy, so some days I'm stuck in bed or can't get down the stairs. So, being able to have the doors open to the back garden is simply wonderful, and because of that I wanted to be able to lay in bed and see the pond
The whole concept was one of tranquility and easy maintenance. My house is decorated in white, black and grey because I find the monochrome colours very restful, so I wanted to extend that into the back garden to create a feeling of indoor out and vice-versa. Shockingly, it turned out that grey granite was cheaper than man-made concrete slabs, so that fitted in nicely with my theme, as I had a pretty tight budget ... which of course went way beyond what I had originally planned. Looking back it's hilarious what you think you can refurb a garden for, let alone build a pond... let alone a KOI POND!!!
The filter system however I left to the guys that did the work as they were first and foremost pond builders. That was the only thing that I didn't meticulously plan... and the one thing that never worked right for me as I needed something easy to maintain myself. So, this year, when my fish were in the Intex due to parasites so I could bomb the pond, I took the opportunity to replace it all, and now I'm really delighted with the set up. I also used SweetHome to come up with the new filter layout, as I had a very confined space to work with and had to make it fit with the existing pipework and electrics. Here are some examples of how it came together. The colours were just used to represent Eazy Connectors and differentiate the different water types (ie dirty, filtered, waterblade). I can highly recommend this software for anything that requires a bit of planning as it allows you to draw everything to scale and take virtual tours:

gosh thats a lot of questions Well i have been a fish farmer & designed RAS systems so thats a start. As to size I'm thinking 3000-4000 gal. Stocking would be light for the first year. Budget will be clearly affected re what type of filtration system i go for. Keep thinking that i should out the comparative costs / benefits for a KockeyKoi type approach V Nexus V Drum & MBBR V Anoxic but that perhaps down the line Have £10k + in mind but hey theres no backup to that gut feeling. But i will be able to do most of the build work myself

Hahaha ... that's for Fred right? !
I actually have the opposite problem ... can't get the buggers open! Stiff little critters. Often have to shout for hubs to come out and open them for me I admit ... there is one on the upper patio that is rarely shut as it gets used a lot and I'm stuck if Mr Koiz is out! But the cover is down if not closed

Lol maybe
If they are just down but not clipped shut then they are basically shower proof but when clipped shut they can be jet washer proof.
They can be a bit tight but if you push the heal of your hand onto the clip at the front and then get your fingers under the clip at the bottom. Then just push on the clip at the front and the bit at the bottom should pull downwards fairly easily.
Give it a try and see how you get on OK

LOL. I have managed to open them occasionally but sometimes my joints are just too painful to push down hard enough! The worst thing about them though is the eight-legged squatters. I swear they're just sitting in there waiting to attack me with 'knives and stabbing weapons'
