Newb!
Hi everyone....
I'm here to share and learn & I'm currently building my first small koi pond, my love of fish goes back to childhood where I lived on a farm with an approx 20 metre square pond I helped build, just rudd & goldfish, I later lived on a larger farm with a huge carp lake & trout river which I helped manage stock etc. which satisfied my love of fishing... since then I now live in suburbia & unfortunately filled in the goldfish pond to build an extension to my house! I kept a 6 ft marine aquarium successfully for several years but sorely miss a fish pond which brings me here, I'm sure I'm make many mistakes & I am limited by costs etc. but confident I can create a decent effort, I will post a description of the materials, scale & preferences etc. & seek as much advice as you guys can offer!
Be Gentle.

Welcome to the forum mate. What plans have you got?
My initial plans are nothing like what I am in the process of building!

hi Jay
Guys on here probably laugh at me as only a small scale minimalist project
Basic materials/timber purchased to build a 1.9 m x 1.9 m x 1.5 m partly raised wooden sleeper pond with decking & boxed liner 1mm approx 4500 litres/1000 gallons. construction started so please no advice to change this part!
So far my thinking is....
I have decided to go for a gravity feed filtration system with bottom sump, & for filtration most likely a Evolution Aqua Eazy Pod Air or a KLK 6000 Multi chamber koi pond filter?, a in line UV possibly Evo 25w UV?, a skimmer possibly a Kockney Koi Wide Mouth Surface Skimmer? a 10,000 variable rate pump?
building whilst planning lol!

Good luck with the build I'm sure some experienced ponders will be along soon to give you some advice.
My plans started smaller but have grown and grown!

We seem at same stage.... I see you got the Nexus 220 it’s more than my budget allows so I’m settling for the easy pod and a sieve if I can find a cheap one

To be fair was lucky, was at the right place right time for the 220 with drop in drum and 55 watt UV second hand.

Hi and welcome to the forum
You've made the most important decisions and gone for a good depth for the size of the pond and a bottom drain, its got all the makings of a decent little pond, my current pond is the first one with bottom drains, I don't know how I have managed all this time without a bottom drain
All the best with your build4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass
2100 mm x 710 mm Infinity Window 32mm thick glass
2 x Aerated Bottom Drains and Skimmer
Filtreau HiFlow 30 Drum Filter
Bio Chamber - 140 litres K1
Bakki Shower - 30 KG Sakura Far Infrared Media
2 x 18,000 lh pumps
Heated from house boiler through a heat exchanger

the raised wooden sleeper pond will be offset as the filtration will be on one side, also two sides of the pond will be fitted directly to the decking structure... but basically no concrete collar as sitting sleepers directly on soil albeit UC4 treated 15 year on damp course.... i found many wooden pond laid directly on surface so presume OK, please advise.

I would 100% put a concrete collar down il attach a few pics of mine for you to view! You can see I used 10mm rebar for reinforcement also. Also if you look through a lot of the sleeper builds on here you will see they have used collars and show a few pictures which should guide you. Everyone does things slightly different but for me a pond that has water above ground level has to be strong and reinforced as you don’t want it moving! Hope this helps IMG_0318.JPGIMG_0322.JPGIMG_0255.JPG

Thanks (& thanks for private message unfortunately for some reason I can not respond to that message)... I will take on board & evaluate, hold fire & do some more research, I do have some experience as I worked both in landscaping & timber construction & up until this point believed the heavy duty Treated Kiln Dried C24 Timber - 45 X 195 combined with 100 x 200 UC4 treated sleepers set in concrete with at least 6 posts going into the ground to be sufficient. More research time. (which is OK as too hot to dig this week!)

Prices are worlds apart depending if you want an airated bottom drain or non airated mate.
My airated bottom drain with direct air kit and 5 meters of 4" pressure pipe and 5 meters of 1" pressure pipe and pressure 90 swept elbows was £220 delivered I think. Without air I reckon it will be under £100

So.... I'm leaning towards a simple minimalist gravity feed filtration system with a Bottom Drain Aerator, an Eazy Pod & a Surface Skimmer back to the pond via a UV to two below the water line TPR returns (albeit as my build is square, two tank connectors positioned on different walls to create a one directional water flow) My question for you experts is... Can I join the two 4" intakes for the bottom drain & the skimmer into one pipe to enter the Eazy Pod & run with only one pump? Is this suitable for 4500 Lt pond? or should I include a Bakki shower?
Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
