Hi
Hi. Had a small raised pond with 7 Goldfish for a few years which was looking tired. I decided to replace and upgrade. Along the way I became very interested in Koi. Too interested considering I only have 600 gallons and 2.5 feet. The Goldfish are loving it. I’m designing ‘pond 2’ in another part of the garden having got my wife past the shock.

Hello and welcome.

For pond enthusiasts size matters

the bigger the better, as the bug will get you down the line. so get it right first time. costs less in the long run

Double the size, triple the worry and quadruple the budget but worth it in the end
Look forward to the pond build updatesLast edited by f15hie; 20-02-2020 at 01:08 PM.
When I’m dead I hope my Mrs doesn’t sell my fishing gear for what I told her they cost!

look forward to seeing your new plans and build, we like lots of photo's very friendly site with lots of advice available, have a good read through the construction section as plenty of us have been through the pain and shared our build as it progressed, as said above need to be 2000 gallons plus really for koi with some decent filtration via a bottom drain...cheers Steve.

Hi thanks for the reply’s. I’m reading through the construction part of the site. I realise now even my plans for pond 2 aren’t ambitious enough. I’ll be expanding my mind over the coming weeks. And pond 2 size. It’s a more technical hobby than I expected so I’ll spend enough time absorbing information before I start pond 2.

I’m pretty lucky that I was always in 2 minds as to which one of two locations to choose. The area I didn’t go for will open itself up to about 2000 gallons which means I can keep my goldfish pond as it is. I have considered putting 3 or 4 Ghost Koi in whilst I’m working on pond 2 project? That would put me at 10 fish. The Goldfish are all less than 7 inches. I’ve got what I would think is an informed amateur setup in terms of filtration and air. Not what I would plan now but I didn’t know bottom drains or gravity fed systems until a couple of months ago so I’m getting there for planning. Yesterday I learnt about Microscopes on this site. 2 days ago I didn’t know about scraping etc....all very interesting

The pond build is the easy bit mate.
Keeping the koi fish and water chemistry
Is the hard bit. Especially at the start with new pond syndrome.
Read a lot on manky sanke site. For all the water chemistry side of things.

After reading for the last 2 days I have consoled myself that I have built a quarantine pond. I hope.
