Just a 'hello everyone'. Oh, I do have a koi pond!
I was looking online for some treatment and this website came up showing a thread on the subject. So I registered. Here I am!
Quick intro,,,
We bought this house around 18 months ago - it has a large pond. The pond soon became a bit of a project (long story) but I am pleased with the finished results. It's a large pond - I estimate 130,000 litres! I have maybe 60 fish in all, but with half about 2 or 3 years old and half just just year-old koi. There are a few mirror carp in there as well. They all appear healthy but have found some trichodina on a kohaku this morning.
Mind you, trying to keep herons away is the main issue, but i have also had flukes and white spot over the last year. All sorted now, but I'm making it sound like I have massive issues - I haven't. Just unlucky with some purchases, me thinks, and no quarantine set up rolling as yet.
I love my pond and will have the quarantine set up by Spring time, all filtered up and bacteria established. I recently bought a quarantine tank but it is too big. I wanted 800mm wide. This one arrived 1.1m wide, despite the guy saying it was 800mm. It was collected for me and is too much hassle to send it back. I'll have a think about it.
On to today, a routine scrape shows trichodina. Only a few - but a PP treatment is needed. The last purchase of the young fish is probably where the trichodina came from! I've now bought a few bags of crystals & reverse earlier on today.
The water is now cold, obviously, and the pond is too big to heat. Well, to make any difference, I mean. I wish I could heat it a few degrees by solar. Not a chance, me thinks. It's about 5' 5" deep in the middle.
I still have a lot to learn, but I have done a lot of learning so far. :-)
There's the summary!
Cheers all,
Rottie

Hi guys.
Apologies for not coming back sooner. Busy and it got cold! Pond just ticked over. I went out to work in the dark and got home in the dark.
I lost a few ovcer the winter. Small ones not strong enough, mainly. But most look ok now. Although one looks like a touch of dropsy. Too late for him, me thinks. Others look ok. Unrelated but I will do a precautionary treatment on the whole pond (not cheap!) but will do it. The water temp has warmed considerably.
Anyway, I've just started feeding them again. They were all hungry. Hardly any plants left.
I will get some photos up, but ned to sort the cloud out as they're all on my phone.
Am always welcome to any tips, info or help! I've learnt a lot this last 18 months, but lots and lots more to learn!
Cheers
Rottie

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
