    Ray says hi

Hi all, My name is Ray. I recently moved from London to Essex about 18 months and this is my first pond. This pond was left by the previous owner and it was empty. After a few months after the move I though I would set it up and I bought my self a Blagdon 10000 Filter and ran it for a month before I added fish. After a while I tested my water and all was not good. I think the pond was to large for the filter.

I read up and learned a few things and decided to get a Bakki shower filter and I love this thing... The top chamber does my mechanical filtration. Just under the removeable spray bar I made a 200 micron Sieve tray and and below that I have course, medium and fine foam sponge. Needs cleaning every week but does a great job.. The lower 3 chamber I have 25KGs of pumice and 10KGs of BHM in each. I have had this running for 3 months now and tested my water and it is perfect.. Just the PH is 7

2 of the outlets from the Blagdon filter is fed to a home made Aquaponics shower. I havent put in any plants as yet. The 2 lower chamber have alfagrog.

The pond have to internal pumps fed to the Blagon and the Bakki. I am a bit hooked on this new hobby.. and next year I plan to completly rebuld the pond. Wider, taller, pond window and a bottom drain etc..

I did have a tragedy last week. A heron nearly wiped out all my fish. Only 6 left. So next project is to a build some mesh panels to cover me pond..
    Any way.

    Thats all for now..

Welcome mate. It don t take long to get the koi bug.
Take all winter to plan your new build.
And on the heron front. Why not put covers on for winter. Stop herons. Also help temperature for the fish. Kill two birds with one stone. So to speak. Excuse the punRay says hiRay says hi enjoy

Hello and welcome Ray, looks a good sleeper pond mate a few on here have them so plenty of advice when you expand.
Done a good job making the filter and the big bakki shower looks the buisness.

As your ph is low as in 7 check your kh mate as if that is low you could get a crash, but dont panic of the kh is low you need to then check your tap water and if that's low you need to add sodium bicarbonate to raise the kh.
Check it first then get back to us.
Sorry for the preaching as it's your first post.
Herons, could add a net or as Fred said cover which will keep the wind chill off.
    John

Hi Fred, Thanks for the advice.

I was thinking of making some covers with plastic roofing sheets. was also thinking of making a frame and using this mesh.
PVC COATED GALVANIZED WELDED WIRE MESH but I am a little worried if it might leach the water.

Hi John, Thanks for the advice regarding the PH. All my other parameters are perfect its just the PH. I have a test kit but it does not have the KH test so I will pp into my local fish shop and buy one. Its been raining heavily for the last 3 weeks so maybe its all the rain water in the pond..

If your making covers. With roofing sheets.
You would nt need the wire galvanized mesh. I know nothing about the mesh.
Could leech. The covers would act as a deterrent until spring time. Plus keep wind chill off the pond.
And give you time to decide what to put across come spring time. RS on here had some wire covers made for his pond. A lot heavier though. Or put a thread up on covers for keeping herons of the pond.
You will get a lot of responses. As there is quite a few on the site. With heron problems.
    Could give you some ideas.
