Best Test Kits
I have some small water test kits by various manufacturers Colombo, API, NTL Labs but I wondered if people have a favourite manufacturer or one that they’ve found to be consistently accurate.

I switch between colombo and api, not sure if I prefer one over the other though, I prefer the test tubes and the compact package of the api kit but the columbo kit has kh and gh and the api doesn't. I also tend to favour the ammonia test in the api kit most times but then I've been using the colombo kit more in recent tests so on the whole I'd say they're both good. For accuracy though I'd like to get the hanna testers, maybe santa might spring for a couple if im good

I use Seneye to track trends, as not accurate enough for reading for me... so I rely on a Colombo test kit, I also use DPD4 tabs for chlorine and a small Oxygen testing kit, I forget the name of that one

Following me adding new fish recently, I started weekly testing again, but things have been settled from day one, so I have now reverted back to fortnightly testing, with just the odd addition of an individual test if I have any concerns to get reassurance...Last edited by dbs; 01-10-2025 at 04:09 PM. I too have added fish recently & have started testing regularly .for a couple of months. I use API from one their multi kits & dip sticks for rough checks.

I like the Hanna pocket testers but don't much like the cost of their reagents, even so I find them accurate and reliable so keep on using. Most of my nits fit into a aluminium case so handy to have all in one place. PondLab drop tests for the other bits

I use all electronic meters but I was asked to product test some manual test kits and the API Freshwater Master Kit proved as accurate as you can expect from a manual kit. They aren’t the cheapest but they are accurate and very economic because you get generous amounts of reagents so you don’t have to keep buying replacements. You can buy the API Freshwater Master kit and the matching KH kit on eBay for just over £40 on the links below:

You will also need to test KH so choose the KH kit from this listing:

Re my post above; this forum is often slow due to the overwhelming number of its so-called guests hogging all the available bandwidth so if anyone is interested in these kits, it may be quicker to copy the links and paste them directly into the address line of a new tab.
