    Moving bed calculations

Morning, I'm thinking if building my own moving bed filter. I've read that 1lt if media per 100lt if water is a good starting point. What I cant find is how much water per litre of media and hence the size of container needed once I know how media I'm going to use, if that makes sense. Any ideas? Thanks

Also looking to build this in a month or so, in the mean time if I buy some media, if I put this in a net in the pond will this mature or is that just a waste of time?

How much you want to use depends on how many fish you have any how much you want to feed. For example I have 13,000 litres roughly and 130 litres of K+ would not allow me to feed much at all.

How big is your pond and how much do you want to feed? It will help to stick some in bags in the corner of the pond although I had some in bags for a year or so in my pond and when I added the rest I still had NPS syndrome for the season as I only had about 25 litres in the pond as that was all I could fit (had it in my old filter not in the pond).

I have about 250l currently but I haven't really pushed it, I would hope to be able to feed at least 400g of food a day with what I have.

I only have a very small 1000l pond that I'm housing a few fry in, will move them on when they get bigger. Currently running an easypod. I'm using this pond to learn for a bigger build in the future.

Fair enough, well regardless you are far better to be over filtered than under thats for sure!

Yeah exactly, trying to learn and get mistakes out of the way now rather than with a big pond and expensive fish. So for you 250l media, what's the capacity of the actual moving bed unit itself?

As previously said work out what you want to feed per day. For k1 they say it’s 5g of food per litre of k1. Maybe if everything is optimum (temperature, mechanical filtration, KH & PH) but I find that’s not accurate. Closer to 2g of food per litre for me.

Work out how many fish you have and more importantly the total approximate weight. From there figure out how much you want to feed them in the height of growing season. 1-2% is the norm. Then from there work out how many litres you need of k1. Then you want a bio chamber no more than 50/60% full. The bigger the better really to help with retention times.

This is more complicated than I imagined🤣 thanks for your help 👌 how much water per liter of media?

If you mean in your bio chamber 2L water per 1L of media

You ah that's what I mean Thankyou

I have about 55% currently but I believe they say not to go over about 60% so if you have a 100l bio chamber it can take 60l of K1 for example. I have plastic tubs I think they are 250l blue ones.
