Thread: Sucking air

    Sucking air

Im getting such an airlock in my pump after the K1 moving bed. I can hear all the bubbles and airpockets through the pipework and pump. How can this be eliminated? Attached photo of plumbing, and the PVC pipe is the outlet in the bio. Reducing the airpump in the bio hasn't helped.
    Thankyou

i would have the pump feed at the bottom of the bio, not half way up where the air is mixed with the water.
could also be cavitation, there doesn't look to be enough flow through those few holes for the pump so it will be restricted, which can cause cavitation.
cutting slots is better than drilling holes

Agree with Dave spin the pipe to the bottom of the bio and more bigger holes or cut slits in the pipe, easily done with an angle grinder and cutting disc.

Agree with above not enough holes to get water to the pump, drawing air down the feed. There's also a lot of joints before the pump this could be causing air to be sucked in through a leaky joint.

Thanks guys, turns out the issue was string algae completely blocking the holes as it came in through the vortex. Have also lowered the pipe and added more slits into the pipe. No more bubbles!
