Filtreau Drum 20 - water usage / clean cycles
Anyone running one of these?
I have a major pain in the ass issue ive been struggling with for a year now (ill come on to that later).
For now id be interested to know water usage others are seeing?
10000Ltr pond
1 x 4" bottom drain
Filtreau 20 drum with high flow SST screen
Running a 20000 vari pump (currently reduced to 7500lph (used to run at 10000).
Pond running with same setup circa 4yrs
I have a ongoing issue of every few days the water level drops in the filter, it then continually cycles until the water level in the filter drops to the pont that the filter stops cycling and the pond water level drops and the pump churns away with barely any water in it.
Its not the screen (replaced and cleaned)
Not the float switch (replaced)
Not the water pump (replaced)
Not the control box (replaced)
I then have to top the pond up to get things running again....
The filter is cleaning once every 20-25mins (approc).
I calculated that it uses the equivalent to 40 seconds of tap water per clean cycle (eg leave your tap on for 40seconds).
That means I would need to have a tap on for 2 minutes every hour of the day in order to maintain the same water volume as whats being used. This seems like a LOT of water.
I know to reduce the amount of cycles I can lower the float but I about 20mm from the lowest it can go - be interested on where others have their set.
Ruling out a leak on the pond. I can only determine that I am either not adding enough water back into the system OR I have it set to clean cycle way too often.
50mins of constant tap usage every day is making me sweat! I was even contacted my the water company because they thought I had a leak lol
How many cycles per hour are people getting on this filter?
How much water are they adding/using?
Thanks!
H

I should add that my setup with regards to putting water back in is done via mains feed with a app controlled inline valve. This allows me to set how long its open for and when.
So currently its set to come on every hour for 2 mins. (which is what I calculated the filter is using when doing clean cycles @ around 3ph).
It just seems like a LOT of water usage......

have you eliminated the possibility of leaks?
you won't be able to exactly match the water used by your drum with a timer.
the amount of cleans depends on a lot of different factors. fish waste, weed, leaves ect...
an auto top up via float valve is the easiest method,
solenoids and an electronic top up system (expensive)
or just add more water than the drum uses.
I add about 150 litres a day for the drum, this is more than it actually uses but saves having to closely monitor and adjust manually.
plus 150 litres for the waste from the recycle RO via a solenoid and timer.
so 300 litres a day or 3%
how much water per day are you adding?

Presuming you have the same filter as me. If your only using 150ltr a day that would mean ot can only be doing a clean cycle like once and hour??
I guess my question really is… is the amount of water I’m adding and the amount of cycles it’s doing sound about right?
how many cycles is yours doing per hour (average)?
How are you topping up? (Float/auto top up? And if so where ?
Thanks

Pa I’m currently adding 288ltr per day and averaging one clean cycle every 20-25mins
