    Pre-filter Tempest

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and I know that instead of spending over £2,000 on the Oase Screenmatic we should have bought a drum filter 😔 The mechanical part (screen filter) works great for taking out large debris but the sponge filters are a nightmare to clean properly without taking them all out which is a mammoth and dirty job. It probably will improve a bit now as we have replanted all the pond plants without soil into large cobbles.
I spoke to EA and they recommended putting a Tempest before the Oase. They believe that this will take out a lot of the sludge/silt before it reaches the sponges. Only thing is they have an optimum flow rate of 5,000 litres per hour and our pump is 20,000 litres per hour.
We could perhaps fit 3 Tempest filters but don’t want to buy something that just won’t work.
I’ve seen them fitted as final filtration but the tech. Guy I spoke to said it would be ok before the Oase.
    Thoughts please 😊

If you had 3 tempests to you wouldn't need the Oase screen o matic at all! Cut your losses, clean it up and sell it.
You could put a sieve in front of it and then just use the sponges for bio, but realistically, you'd be better off with a box full of media or a moving bed after a sieve or tempest.
    Or just fit a nexus...
Or perhaps you'll get a second hand drum for second hand screen o matic money?

Looked at a few combi drums yesterday. Koi Pro (filtreau) and the Aqua Source Synergy. On a fundamental level the difference is a 70 micron drum as opposed to 120 micron on the Koi Pro. As our filter is pump fed we don’t have Burtons as an option without a lot of extra work. Please could someone help us decide? The difference in cost between the two is approx £1000 which is fine if we are going to get a better drum with better results.

If it's pump fed, go for the finer 70 mesh as the pump mashes the solids up.

We had narrowed the choice down and really liked the Red Label but they only have 120 micron so I got in touch with the manufacturer and they have offered to put a 75 micron screen on the unit we buy. Pretty excited now. Just want to give the fish a good life and give ourselves more time to enjoy them. Cleaning sponges is an awful job even during the summer months. I know everything needs some maintenance but the drum and fluid bed just has to be better.
