Thread: Bakki shower - test of various media

I have a plan to test different type of shower media next to each other. Mostly in terms of lowering NITRATEs.

So in general I am not satisfied at all in terms of reducing nitrates. Want to change all the media for something new. But taking into account that my bakki is big, I want to make some performance test before. My pond usually has a lot of nitrates during season - 40 to 70 ppm, so it is perfect for this kind of test.

I have old, 100cm wide, 4 tier small bakki. I want to convert it into separated 4 chambers, from top to bottom. Each chamber will have its own outlet to take the water for testing. Over the top tray, there will be drip plate to spread the water evenly.

For the first test I want to use those media:
- Mountain Tree Ceramic Media (already have it prepared)
- original BHM (Momotaro) - have to source it from the UK (Poland here)
- ALFAGROG - same as above, have to order from the UK
- AQUAROCK (https://www.jakoib.pl/oczka-wodne/me...ltracyjny-15kg), available in Poland, I have been told is is very similar to ALFAGROG but made in China

I plan to test first batch of media somewhere around MAY 2025 when the feeding starts again.

If someone wants to test his media, I can do it in the second batch. But the media must be delivered to Poland which might cost some...

Any advices?

Not sure how you will measure the success of this.
Bakki showers work with high flow dropping through the trays of media.
The flow of this gas’s off some Amonia which in turn reduces the amount eventually being nitrate.
When I got my shower the thinking was you need at least four trays to do this.

I will test water parameters before and after the bakki (each chamber separately). Water in / water out. I have a digital photometer.
