Mains water solenoid
At last I’ve ordered a drum filter, it should arrive next week.
Can anyone recommend a reliable solenoid so I can use mains water for back flushing.
Many thanks
Martin.

The one that came with my draco works fine. But when it opens it dribbles a bit of water out the top. I think they all have potential to do that, so don't panic if that happens with yours. It also gets too warm and stops working temporarily if the washes in the pond ever go to 4 or 5 mins apart. Works fine again after it's cooled down. That can happen if you do some maintenance on the pond or a blanket weed treatment or something.
You may also have to take note of which way up you fit it. The bell shape dome needs to go at the top. Or it does at least, on the unit I have. That was a cause of common failure on draco rdf solenoids, because they hadn't considered that in the design of the early units and you couldn't fit the standard solenoid properly without cutting the lid (which I did in the end)

Thanks for the info, much appreciated
I’ve gone for a Fitreau drum as Draco don’t produce the drum I wanted anymore, and the upgrade was outside my price range. I’ve got everything I need to install it now, including the solenoid and planing on doing the install this weekend. I need to try and get the install done as quickly as possible, as I’ve got to drain the pond 3/4 off the way down so the bottom drain is no longer live.
It’s going to be a stressful weekend

Drum filter all fitted, and up and running.
The solenoid is wired into the controller and seems to be working fine, with ample water pressure to clean the screen.

Interested to know if that one dribbles a bit when its open?

Early days, just 2 days running the drum and not a single drip from the solenoid, I’ll see how it goes over the next few months.
Alburglar; I see your running a Draco drum, I may be wrong but I think everything on that drum runs off 24v DC, the solenoid I’m using is 220v AC, but I do know the same manufacturer do a 24v DC version.

I have the exact solenoid running on mine and it's 220v AC it runs perfectly has done for years. I think the output for the solenoid is ment for powering the wash pump from memory, so has a higher voltage for the wash pump. I remember as I was a bit concerned having 220v near water, but touch wood it's been fine.

It's a Fitreau. It's been running for around 4 years now. I did have to replace the main drum motor after about a year. The original one burnt out apparently quite common for them to go. I had it replaced with an upgraded one under warranty, and it's been fine since. I do just make sure to greese with silicone greese the inside of the drum rim every 3-4 weeks. I found it can start to bind and judder a bit if you don't, and it keeps the stress off the motor.

The solenoid on my Dracodrum2 has just failed today
Have emailed Draco about buying a replacement (running since 2016, so not under warranty).
I see that Amazon do a 12 volt version of the one you have, so will consider that as a backup plan.
Thanks for sharing.
edited for typo.
edited to add that I have just received a quote from Draco for £103.80 to replace the solenoid.
I think I'll try the US Solid one first.Last edited by GDL; 04-09-2024 at 04:26 PM.
