    Beginner's Question About Pump and Pipe Size

    Hi. I've introduced myself in another section of the forum but just to say that I'm a beginner in the koi world thanks to buying a house that has an empty 8000-litre pond. My wife has tried to encourage me to turn it into a koi pond by ordering a pressure filter with a capacity of 30,000 litres per hour.
    So here is my contender for Daft Question of the Day and it relates to the choice of submersible pump and pipe size.
    I understand it's best if the pump has an hourly capacity at least equal to the quantity of water in the pond and I've calculated that total head is 2 metres. Having looked at the performance graphs of a few pumps I think a pump with a capacity of perhaps 12,000 or 14,000 litres per hour would be adequate as that would mean around 10,000 liters would be entering the filter every hour.
    I'm assuming that if you pump in 10,000 litres of pond water every hour into a pressure filter with a capacity of 30,000 litres per hour that 10,000 litres of will be returned to the pond every hour, equivalent to just under 3 litres per second.
    So a few questions
    Do my numbers look OK? Should I be looking at a different capacity pump?
    What pipe size should I be using? From looking at other examples I think 1.5 inch or 2 inch but I don't know how to calculate it.
    Would that amount of water returning from the filter to the pond be enough to create a decent waterfall effect (approximately 10,000 litres per hour, 2.8 litres per second)?
    I think there will be three elbow joints between the pump and the filter. Do these affect the total head calculation?

    Pipework - depending on the length of pipe required and the combination of bends needed, all of these add up to how much of the flow will become restricted. That's the reason by going bigger, is always better.

    Pumps - are usually measured at the output, for their optimum output. Add together your pipe length and head height to find your restriction. Another rule of thumb is, a 20k pump running at 50%, is more economical, in terms of cost and wear, against a 10k pump running at 100%, for example. Check the manufacturers specs before purchasing however bare in mind these are written at their optimum performance. Again, bigger is better, for when your fish need it.

    Then there's the other debate, over which type of filter is best..

    When you say about a 20k pump running at 50%, I thought that a typical submersible pump worked at 100% only. Do you mean a pump that can be adjusted manually by the user or does a pump automatically reduce the force it uses if it's pushing through more water than the pipes can handle?

    Both are correct.
    For example, other brands are also available, dependant on your budget.. I think Swell do a similar pump, probably the same in design and performance, with different badges on. I could be wrong though..
