    DIY moving bed filter

As per title, I need something about 150 liters just wondering if anyone has had issues with the wham bam boxes bowing, bearing in mind that I intend to use 80% of its capacity which would then be 120 liters with 60% media and 40% water.
At the moment I am leaning more towards the barrel option as they are purpose made for holding liquid.
Any thoughts or advice would be great
    Thanks
    Ian

I've used the biggest wham box I could find (think it is around 100l or so) and I have no issues with the side bowing.

You could make a wooden frame around it to act as a brace. Plus you could put pir board in the gaps and it'd be insulated too.

I've use the clear wham boxes for temporary water holding, but find they crack too easily for long term use.
either a blue barrel or black water tank would be a better option...

these boxes are bullet proof though, or very strong anyway
from 72 litre to 455 litre various sizes and colours.

I have decided on a 120 liter blue barrel. The flow rate going thought it will be 5000 liter per hour which is pump fed by 1.5 inch pressure.
I intend to put the inlet about 18 inch from the bottom. The gravity fed outlet will be in the top third of the barrel with a short piece horizontally the a short vertical with a strainer almost like a nexus.
I have about 70 liters of K1 media which has about 10 liters of micro mixed in which I intend using.
Anyone managed to get this flow rated with a 2inch outlet which I would prepare as I have all the fittings or would 3 inch be better
Any idea if the micro will clog the strainer I was thinking of the kockney koi type of strainer.
    Thanks
    Ian

i ran my pump fed filters on the old pond with two x 50mm waste return pipes and a drop of about 2 ft.
i ran them at about 5000 lph with an aquaforte 20,000 vario at about 70% because of the long run of pipework to the filters.

But they would swamp the filters if i tried to run them any faster. so maybe 3" or 4" would be a better bet and have some spare capacity?

Just finished and plumbed in my DIY filer so thought I would give some feedback.
I decided to use a 120 Liter Barrel. I bought these fitting from eco filtration as they will not let K1 micro through ( had some K1 mixed in with micro). The cages fit 2 inch waste.
I decided to fit both Tank Connectors in the middle section of the barrel as I thought the curvature of the lower and higher part of the barrel may be more difficult. Inside the barrel I fitted a downward pipe to the inlet and a horizontal then vertices to the outlet.
I am pleased with the outcome, I got 70 Liters ok K1 with a flow rate of 2000 liters per hour which boiled easily with a EA 70, infact I used less air than that pump as I tapped a bit of my bottom drain and bio for my priofidrum into the barrel4BEF378F-A67C-41F8-8E26-DDCA6F569CBC.jpgA1424FAD-FAA5-43FA-BE82-BB3698FF6436.jpg

The cages are great and come with the Tank Connector but you can buy the cage separately, even though the 2“ inch waste Tank Connectors are adequate I think next time I would go for the pressure Tank Connector as they are a note sturdy unit and use a reducer. The flow rate of 2000 LPH may be a bit too slow for some people and but is ideal for me as I have tapped off a flow of 10000 LPH which had already been through a bio at that flow rate. I am hoping the slower dwell time will lower my nitrite from 0.08 to below 0.05. If more flow rate is required eco filtration sell a 2 cage set up
