Filter advice please
Hi everyone, new to the koi world but loving it.
I have just built my own raised pond and put a oase 19000 filter in but it appears not to do the job very well, so I've been out and bought a oase screenmatic 60000, but I've been reading things on line and they say they need to be above water level, or could i place it below the water level? Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks Karl

Oase screenmatic do two versions one gravity fed the other pump fed.

Hi Martin, yeah it is a pump fed.
I assume it should be fine to sit below the water level, sorry if I sound stupid am very new to all this

Sorry to say but that type of filter has to be installed above the water level. To install a filter below water level on a pumped system you need a pressurised filter which is completely sealed.

Thanks Martin for the advice, do you think i should get a second pressurised filter to run along side the 19000 and help to get rid of the murky water.
Thanks

how big is your pond and what stock of fish and sizes?
pressure filters are not a lot of good.
you would be better of with a 2nd hand easy pod, or nexus, depending on pond size.

Hi dave, it's 8000 litres. It's got two 12inch koi three goldfish around 4inch peace and two 4inch ghosties, but i look to get three or four more koi next year once i figure out the best filter system for what I need.
It's just i don't want one that sits above the water level and is able to power my water blade, what are your thoughts.
Thanks Karl

He wants to go or stay pump fed so an Eazy Pod or Nexus isn't going to be possible as if you pump fed it you have to have it gravity returned which means it would have to have the return pipework above the water level.
Pressure filters are not going to be much good on a pond that size as they won't have enough bio capacity to deal with the waste from that many koi once they start growing.
If you are determined to keep the filters below the surface of the pond you are probably looking at a bead filter. Only issue could be, how are you going to deal with the waste water from filter cleans? We need more information as to exactly what you are trying to do as it's currently just guess work for anyone trying help with only very limited information of your full set up.
Maybe a drawing or some photos would help?________________________________________________

Hi Frimley, thank you for your info, i dnt know how i upload photos /vids.
It's a raised sleeper build with a window, with composite cladding and a 800mm wide blade running in, iam looking for something that would handle the litre size and doesn't look an eyesore sat on the edge of the pond. Hope this helps

There is an icon on here that allows you to upload photos from your computer or phone. You can use things like Postimage or similar to put photos on here.
OK so you've got an 8000 litre raised sleeper pond with a window. You want to stay pump fed. When you say filters below the water level, do you mean they are sitting on the floor or ground with the pipework or flexi hose going up over the side of the pond and then down to the filters? Or are they raised up so the tops of the filters are level with the water level in the pond but hidden behind the pond or something?________________________________________________

My neighbour has a screenmatic and he has his enclosed so you cant see it,can you not do that and have it gravity return.
Must say I was impressed with it as i hadn't seen one before.John

I was thinking maybe stick an Eazy Pod or Nexus above the surface and hide it somehow.
Those Oase Screenmatics look quite a good option and I'm sure someone on here was using one and had it part buried. Think they are quite expensive for what they are.________________________________________________

Looks like a nice pond you've got there.
Maybe an Oase Screenmatic mounted behind the water blade above the water level but still below the water blade. May need to make a stand to sit it high enough. A bead filter sitting on the ground behind the water blade. Beads come up fairly regularly on here, ebay, farce book etc. Second hand at good prices too. Will need a UVC, an air pump and an air disc for the pond.________________________________________________

Scroll down the page to the stand alone beads not the all in one kits as they have to be mounted higher up or at least are gravity fed I believe but the stand alone beads have to be pump fed so can be mounted lower down.
The link is just to show you one make so you have an idea of what to look for. A few manufacturers make beads so there's plenty to choose from. Just look at the specs to see what will be good for your size pond. Always better to go as big as possible to allow for fish grow and extra fish in the future. Basically you can't over filter a pond but you can very easily under filter it.
Something to take into account with a pump fed pond with a window. Once you sort out your water quality and clarity you will see everything that's in your pond through your window. Pump, pipework etc etc.

Another option could be a Tempest or even 2? Check EA for the spec of those. Might even be able to get 2 brand new ones for the price of a really good condition 2nd hand bead? Only downside is they don't have much bio capacity.

To heat or not heat - where do you...
Not sure what to do this year, pond averaged 22c / 23C during the hot months and 20c past month,...
