    EA k+ advanced filter

Anyone got one of these? They’ve been out a while and not seen many user reviews. They seem to like them at quality nishikigoi.

I haven't seen much about them but regarding quality nishikigoi, EA could bring out a denim thong with the EA badge on and quality nishikigoi would tell you its the best thing in the world I would look for more independent reviews over anything QN say about EA products personally

Not even looked but it’s a bead filter! Mainly used to improve water clarity (because you fitted a nexus)…. Just another place to trap a load of crap and let it fester (like a nexus!) (or a tempest) Its amazing that EA havent admitted defeat and made a drum (rather than the same old places to trap crap and let fester…) but while out of date nexus and beads are still selling I suppose why would they.

As Spongebob points out, it appears to be just a bead filter for trapping bacteria and parasites etc, just with an expensive price tag (starting at Ł1000).

Doesn't look any different to the used bead filter I bought a couple of weeks back complete with new blower for Ł200.

When it came to cleaning the thing out, shocked is not the word, I was out in the back garden with conservatory door open and once I stirred up all the media the smell was so bad I felt sick. Went indoors and the wife asked why the house stunk of sewage.

The dirt in the bottom was all congealed and so disgusting I eventually hoovered out all the media and binned it. Still stunk after jet washing it so its currently sitting there filled with water and bleach.

I also noted in the video where he had the blower on and said it is all being agitated now, but if you peep down the bleed hole you can see there was definitely media not moving at all.

I bought mine for the pumped skimmer line so will only be surface debris going in, and after what I've witnessed with mine I definitely would not want one as a main filter.

They are sold and used for swimming pools I believe so were certainly not originally designed to deal with the muck a koi pond produces.

Interesting! I knew bead filters are well known for this problem, but wondered if this K+ media made any difference. I think even on the video QN suggested giving it an extra long clean once a month, which makes me think there could be similar problems….

    Thanks folks!

Hi, i have the EA 24 inch one of these on a 2800 gallon pond. It is fed from a retro bottom drain. I used this as i have do not have enough room for a drum or nexus. The water is crystal clear & the filter is very easy to clean once you have done it a couple of times. The skimmer line feeds 2 tempests which feed a bakki shower which probably copes with most of the bio load. I clean it twice a week in the summer, once a week in the winter & have always had good water parameters. Not had any problems yet after 9 months & would highly recommend if your short on space or want a water polisher.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Do you find it uses much water when you clean it? It has to be pumped to waste I think? Cheers

It normally drops the pond level a couple of inches. Yes it has to be pumped to waste. I run a 15000 varipump at 70%, but when i clean i run it at 100% to flush out the waste better.

Agree with Carpingsparky said, I’ve had mine for 16months or so, but mines after a bottom drain fed sieve - very happy with it

I’d be reluctant to pull straight off a bottom drain, but would be fine if a skimmer line with a basket .

Thanks chaps. I’ve currently got an ultrasieve 3 from the BDs (which does a great job) and thinking about one of these to go after it to make cleans easier instead of the taking apart the multi bay. Main bio will still be 600l IBC with 200l K1.

Drums seem to be getting more expensive these days sadly.

i remember when these types of things were run on koi ponds in the 80's and 90's...

they were put after a vortex/brushes/japmatting/canterbury spa, then pumped through the 'sand filter'
and actually had silica sand as the media in them,

water came out sparkling clean like a swimming pool, but used to block up daily....

Can someone help me on how much K+ sinking and floating ratio I should put in my nexus200
    Please?

Do you use it as your main bio after the sieve? What are they like as a mechanical filter. Thanks

    I run BD to midi sieve / 24inch K1+ Advanced / Roto shower ( 135l of BHM )

The sieve is doing the majority of mechanical, before pumped to the K1+ Advanced, then polished water goes over the shower.

Prior to this I was just running sieve to shower, and the Advanced made a big difference with the fines after installing.

As mentioned previously, I’d be reluctant to run straight out off the BD or first line of mechanical filtration.
