Kept my covers on and was at 23.6 this morning, over 24 again now. I have laid one cover down though as a lot of the bigger fish sansai and over were laying on the bottom. Not clamped or anything but obviously trying to get out the heat a bit so laid a cover down to cover 1/3rd and offer shade.

Don't be too eager to get the shade built.
Due to my pergola over my pond being too efficient at blocking the sun out, my pond is only at 19.7C. no wonder my fish don't bloody grow lol But I do have the upside of never being bothered by blanket weed, so not all bad.
I currently have a sanke in a 1m long measuring tub in salt and acriflavin due to an injury/raised scales after treating for flukes. That tub hit 26C this afternoon nice and warm for the recovery from the injury, but now the differential between that and the pond makes me wonder when I can get it back in the pond next.

Could you float the tub in the pond to equalise the temperatures then move it from the tub to the pond?

Could do, but it'll weigh a ton and trying to hoik it up over the splash guards will probably result in something getting broken.
I'm now planning on leaving it in there til the morning in the hope it cools down a few degrees overnight and then transfer it.
I must admit I was skeptical the whole salt and acriflavin combo would work, bearing in mind it's in an unfiltered tank (I've done 100% water changes each day). But it looks like its healing well. I was sure I was going to lose it when I first saw it. This heat has definitely helped.

It's all I use now if I have a injured fish, splash of acraflavin and salt in a tank for half hour or so every few days and it helped all but 1 recover last year. The one that didn't recover was the one that I decided to sedate and clean the wound again, I don't know why I done it because it was recovering, I guess I just thought it would help speed up the process and it never recovered from the sedation. Just drifted about for a few days and gradually went downhill.

Just make sure you've eaten your 3 shredded wheat for breakfast washed down with some Red Bull then a massive lot of spinach washed down with Relentless for lunch then go for it in the afternoon
Could you empty some of the water out of the tub first to make it lighter?________________________________________________

When I sedated 3 of mine last year it was scary as some went under in seconds and some took 2 minutes then trying to bring them back was worse holding them over the stream of bubbles from the air disc slowly moving them back and forth. I seem to remember the one that went under the quickest was the hardest to bring back again
It didn't help that it was the first time I'd ever tried to do it so my ring piece was on high alert if you know what I mean________________________________________________

MS222 was much better in the 1990's imo...
And was easy to get from a good dealer...
When i came back to koi and had to use masuzai took 10 mins for my kujaku to go under. And half an hour to come round.
Now i use a half dose with him. Takes 10 mins to go under still be comes round in about 15 mins...

I used Kusuri Sedate I think it's also called something else.
The size of the fish might have an effect on how they react to being sedated?________________________________________________

sedate is what masuzai is now called... 2 phenoxethanol,
been nearly 30 years since i last used MS222 but found it more forgiving and easier to use, as long as you had a decent KH.
got a funny look when i asked for some at a dealers and was given the masuzai instead.
but heard 2-phenoxethanol can cause liver and kidney damage in koi....
but this could all change soon,
as MS222 has got new approval for the uk in march 2022 under the usa brand syncaine.
and is included in the small animals exemption so could be marketed legally...
but the H&S require a half mask respirator...
it is just that particular fish that takes a long time... others go under in a couple of minutes, and come out in a couple of minutes more.
you only need to fully anesthetise koi if doing surgical work imo.
for a bit of damage repair with tamodine or mercurochrome,
i only have them lightly under, enough so they don't move around, as long as you work reasonabley quickly.Last edited by davethefish1; 17-06-2022 at 11:52 PM.

Interestingly in Duncan G’s book he suggests that 2 phenoxethanol causes parasites to shed and that if you use it you shouldn’t expect to see many on a scrape

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
