    Questions on airline

So I am new to using 8mm airline etc ordered a few bits but have some questions.

Firstly the airstone I purchased has a 8mm connection but after has a 4mm line tapering down! So that surely would be restricting the airflow? Am I suppose to hack it off with a metal saw?? Thought this was odd!

Also I ordered up a connection for the 8mm airline. I have ordered a 8mm elbow thinking it would suit but it doesnít should I be ordering 10mm fixings to fit the 8mm airline!

Sorry if these question are being abit thick but I rather ask them order more stuff by error. Cheers guys

I used a hack saw on my air stones to remove the smaller 4mm hose connector.

Does seem odd that you should have to do that, but I saw no other way round it.

I did find that after a while, the hose could slip off on the short bit of hose connector. So I put a small cable tie around it, just to be sure the airstone won't fall off.

Ahhh so great mind thinks alike then on the cutting it off with a hack saw. Does seem odd though do all larger air stones come like this then? Thanks for the response mate!

    Indeed. Questions on airline

How I saw it, is if I left the smaller connector on then it's creating an unnecessary restriction on the air flow. And it bugs me if anything consuming power is not working effectively.

All the air stones I've bought all seemed to have a stepped hose connector so it can accept 4mm and 8mm hose.

Although they have all been made of plastic rather than metal as shown in the picture above.

I get why the manufactures make them like that. But they could at least make the connectors a bit long so you don't end up with just a little stub to push the hose onto.

Have you double checked the smaller connector is not screwed into the larger one, before you start sawing away?

No mate it didnít unscrew! I lightly cut it off then had to bore out the size as was still 4mm for a little bit. I show the tool i used may be handy for someone. IMG_2401.jpg

    i use either LLDPE pipe or koiflex in 12mm O.D. 8mm I.D.
    and 12mm pneumatic fittings.
with bulkhead connectors for side connections in the bio chamber (above water level)
with 1/2" miniball valves to control/split air flow with 1/2" x 12mm pneumatic adaptors.

Thanks for the reply Dave so just to confirm if I purchased a 8mm airline this would be a internal 8mm dia and outside diameter of 12mm? Cheers mate and thanks for the links!

    no idea mate,
i assume you mean the clear pvc air line they sell in aquarium shops?

i've never used it in 8mm, but think it's meant for use with barbed aquarium fittings.
i've always used either 12mm braided flex, or pipe.

I thought airstone sizes are for 4mm or 8mm airlines. But Iím not sure as have never needed to go larger as havenít got a massive pond. Seems to be one thing that doesnít have to much to research on as Iím at a loss what to order.

airstones are for 4mm or 8mm, but how you get there can be done several ways...
i don't know what the O.D. of the clear pipe you have bought is?
pneumatic fittings might be ok but it is not what they are designed for...

to be honest you get a bit of air leakage around the 12mm koi flex if you move it around...
but as it's not under a great deal of pressure so it's not usually a problem.

the LLDPE pipe is not very flexible and makes a good strong seal with pneumatic fittings, it's what i use to connect things up with on my air pump.
but i use a pneumatic connector to change to the flexible 12mm braided koiflex, to go to the air stones as it makes an easier seal.

Ahhh I see! Il do abit more research now on these pneumatic fittings. From what I seen on the web they can be used for liquid or air! I thought it was just a koi airline product. Iv ordered up a 12mm guessing my 8mm airline has a outside diameter of 12mm. Only reason I want these fittings is so I can put a ball valve on it to loose some pressure there as I am only running the one 20cm cylinder airstone on my jebao pa45 so I think I may need another means of air to escape so it doesnít build up pressure on the air pump. I did run it today direct to airstone for two hrs without issue! But I have it the past had airstone begin to clog and then the pump shuts off due to overheating or the pressure etc so I do need to sort it out as a back up ! Thanks again Dave
