Made a self cleaning bog filter?

I know it is early days and it could all go pear shaped once roots start clogging the gravel up, the pond has been up and running only since the end of spring but my 25 Koi throughout summer have been thrown high growth food like I stole it and my pond does not have any real mechanical filtration, just a 750 liter tub as a sedimentation chamber. So today I started doing a bit of maintenance, emptied and cleaned the aforementioned tub (plenty of muck) and all the (8) return pumps and opened the bottom drain in one of the two 2x5 meter bogs. The water coming out did not seem too dirty so once empty I dug a hole in the gravel all the way down to the (orange) pipes beneath it and it was all CLEAN AS A WHISTLE. So I can say that so far the bog filters have worked really well, parameters have remained perfect and the gravel has not turned into a stinky mess, at least not yet.
I do think that making a drainable void underneath pipes and gravel is really what saves the bacon.
The water these months has remained very clear, at least viewing from above while filming underwater shows some minute particulate floating about so yes a sieve or drum would have been better than a sedimentation tub but I have my reasons for the choice and on balance am totally satisfied.
Tomorrow I will drain the other bog and that will be my end of summer cleaning done

With natural filtration you have to work in sync with the filter. It will grow to adapt IF the water/weather is correct. Spring and Autumn you may need to alter the feeding if the water parameters start shifting.

Thanks for the advice, will make sure I pay attention to the water parameters as the temperature drops. Having said this the pond is in central Italy so pretty mild until mid November and from May onwards. I am anyway planning to cover pond (40 square meters) and bogs (20 square meters) and to heat as required so hopefully there will be no major drop in performance. I am not claiming to have re-invented the wheel, just tried to see if I could improve a bit on what is said to be the biggest pitfall of bogs (they are a pain to clean).
If it keeps working and if, as planned for a few years down the road, we move back to the Midlands I would like to try and adapt the concept to a less sunny climate
