Thread: Bead or drum?

Hey, yes this is the reply I got from Burtons.

“ All of our drums have a bypass feature. The BD range has a 50mm and the TF range have 2x 50mm (one at either end of the drum). Water consumption for the BD-300 your looking at around 8.5lt per wash and the BD-500 around 11lt”

“ Our wash cycle is factory set for 65 seconds but this can be reduced down by the end user. We set it to this as it means the drum does 2 full rotations. I would say on average they generally clean every 30-40 minutes but obviously there are many factors to that”

That’s a good point, so looking at 20l or more an hour to keep levels

blimey think my wash cycle runs for 10 -15 seconds, be interesting to know if everyone else has a 2 minute wash time?

My wash time tends to last 4-5 minutes, I don't think I could clean myself in 10-15 seconds

    Ha ha!

Sticking to the drum mine's at 11 seconds I think. That does just over one rotation. I tried less, like six seconds, but I was just being ridiculous. 11 secs seems to work for me. Plus my drum does an hourly clean regardless of what the sensors are saying, so seems to stay on top of things, especially now and with covers on (my skimmer feeds into it as well as my BDs).

That sounds more reasonable! What drum do you have? And how do you find water use?

I’ve asked Queni koi for details on their QK35 for comparison.

I think I'm the only person on the planet to own (or admit to) an AquaForte basic drum. I really like it! been running seven months, the only issues I've had with it have been of my own making and ignorance. For the last six months once I started the trickle in it hasn't missed a beat, and it's servicing 2 X 110mm BDs and 1 X 110mm skimmer line. Would have to triple what I paid for the next nearest drum that could handle that throughput. Construction is solid but not bomb proof like others, and the footprint is tiny...I was very dubious at first. Plan to hook it up to a DIY moving bed in the spring.

It's doing a great job so far *temptsfate*

As for water use, my last water bill contained a line about checking to see if I had a pipe leak as my consumption had shot up, that's how that's going...

What did Queni specify for theirs? Be interesting to see what the default setting is

Sounds like a nice drum. Did notice they were a bit cheaper, so good to hear a review. 😂 on the water bill.

Tbh the potential water cost is putting me off slightly. Appreciate all the benefits a drum offers, but don’t think I can use it to justify Ł500 extra a year (going off burtons drum) on water. Keen to hear from others on different drum makes, and if the costs are more sensible!

Queni koi got back to me. The QK35 uses 1.5l per cycle and runs for 12-15 seconds. For comparison, based on 2 cycles an hour.

    Burtons 500
    Per cycle 11l
    Per hour 22l
    Per day 528l
    Per week 3696l
    Per month 14784l
    Cost per month ~Ł49

    QK35
    Per cycle 1.5l
    Per hour 3l
    Per day 72l
    Per week 504l
    Per month 2016l
    Cost per month ~ Ł7

Appreciate each pond is different, and the burtons has a higher flow rate, but the potential costs are quite significant.

those figures sound about right for the QK drums,

i have the smaller QK25 and when medicating the pond i turn the trickle in/out off, and it doesn't use much water over night.
i just top the pond back up each day. to replace what the drum takes out.

unless it's fluke treatments then you have to bypass the drum because it takes them out...

Cheers, and that’s good to hear about the QK25. Overall would you say they’re a good range of drums?

No problem. I was amazed at the difference in potential running costs. Pays to do your research I think, as it’s a big investment

Mine is about 15-30 second - or one rotation. And it washes around once an hour or so.

Cheers all. Think a QK35 settles it. Will be saving up, plus all those bonus points you can earn with QK can go back into another fish 😁
