    Dechlorinater/purifier

I am thinking of adding one of the above or both to try and improve my water quality. I use ST to deal with the chlorine/chloramine but I am thinking of using something to try and remove as much crap from the water as possible and still use ST for the chlorine. Would I be better to get a pre filter then a big blue style purifier or a 3 stage? Will this lake much difference to the water quality or do they simply remove chlorine?

When I installed my Big Blue Jumbo 3 x 10" system a year or so ago I found it had one of the highest claimed flow rates second only to the 20" version (others may have different opinions on this) which allowed me to refill my pond much quicker as it claimed 8 lpm and I was running it at 5 lpm to be on the safe side but all of a sudden the fish stopped eating so I checked the pond for chlorine and it was getting through the filter. I tried it at 3 lpm and even 1 lpm and it was still letting it through. Maybe it was the raised chlorine levels in the mains water supply due to COVID or the canisters were spent sooner than I had though they would be so started to use a tap water conditioner - Interpet Bioactive Plus Aloe Vera - at the same time so use the canister for metal removal and the tap water conditioner for the chlorine removal. Now I can run the water in at 12 + lpm

ST is a cheaper option obviously but the stuff I use I don't need to mix just drop in a pre measured amount 2 or 3 times during a top up depending on how much water I need to put back in and it's job done.

Going to replace the filters when I can get to them and see if that helps with the chlorine removal then maybe I won't need the tap water conditioner unless I want to top up very quickly.

the only problem i've had with 3 pod filters and the reason i currently use 6 x 10" pods.
is even high quality cartridges like spectrum/pentek are rated at a % of chlorine removal,
with a start and end of life percentage of removal.

a 10" big blue spectrum carbon cartridge is about £45 and will remove 95% of chlorine when new,
but only 75% of chlorine by the time is had reached its 'rated' capacity.
so to get 99% chlorine removal to the full rated capacity,
you need at more than 1 carbon block plus a GAC or 2 to polish the last bits that get through towards the end of the rated capacity.

    https://www.fileder.co.uk/hubfs/lite...PECTRUM-SC.pdf

    i'm currently using 6 x 10" standard pods.
    2 x prefilter
2 x high capacity chloramine rated carbon blocks good for 1,000,000 litres each @ 0.3ppm chlorine
2 x bone char GAC that help with heavy metal removal.
the downside is the chloramine carbon cartridges are only 1 micron so flow rates are low, i only get 1.9lpm.

i was going to use the 20" x 4 pod i've had new and not used for over a year now.
but to get a flow rate at 7.6lpm with high chlorine capacity, the fibredyne cartridges work out to £50 each plus 2 x bone char GAC at £25 each
would mean £150 every 6 months or so. £300 a year.

so for the new pond i've bought a 36" big blue loaded with catalytic carbon. and a sack of carbon @ £150 will do 2 x refills and last over a year...
though catalytic has a higher capacity for chloramines than standard carbon, it also has a higher capacity for chlorine too...so will last even longer when you don't have chloramines.
and at a better flow rate.

What I found very misleading was most filter manufacturers quote flow rates in lpm but the single big blue with a pre filter quoted the flow rates in lph so at first glance you think that's a very high flow rate until you recheck a see it's quoting a flow rate for a time 60 times higher than the others. I thought it was just the particular website that was quoting lph but it seemed to be the same on a couple of other websites too. So always double check the actual figures and times

Thanks guys, I use ST for the chlorine anyway I am more interested to hear if these improve the quality of the water or not for anything else that might be in tap water which isn't great for koi. My water is extremely hard here (think it took 24 drops last time I tested) so thinking if it removes any other crap to offer better quality water then it will be worth adding, if not then I won't bother.

it removes a lot of other things to vaying degrees,
UK tapwater can be very good but also very bad depending on it's source.

antimony, aluminium, benzene, lead, arsenic, copper, trihalomethanes, pestacides.....so much rubbish i'm surpised there's any room left for water lol!

this is probably closer to the truth than you would want to believe

Last week, I decided that I needed a big blue and contacted Andy at Finch at Finch Filtration. Great advice, service and prices.
Mine was delivered the next day, just need to plumb it in now.

I have got another version of that song Dave, done by Adam Kay and Suman Bizwas? On their album called Fitness to practice. Same tune but slightly different words lol as soon as I saw your link I thought I'd know the rest lol

Cheers Frim. Trying to decide whether to plumb it in myself or get a plumber in. It's reasonably straightforward now that I've got the mains water pipe in, down to the filter pit. I'm feeling so rough at the moment though, that it's tempting to get the plumber to do it, while I languish on the settee

Well if you really want to spend a small fortune get a plumber to fit it but if want to do it yourself it's a piece of piss once you've got the right fittings and tools.
