Grown tanks on existing filters
Changed my filter system a few weeks back and probably now quite a bit over filtered for the size of my pond, plan was and still is, to add two grow on tanks to the system, just getting into the planning stage where I want to start accumulating some gear to make it all happen.
my initial thoughts are to feed the tanks via my skimmer, the outlet would then run to my uv, through a pump to a tempest and into my bakkishower, I’m guessing this would mean the water in the tanks would see the same filtration as the pond, not sure if this is the best way, as my skimmer would have to run right through winter and I’d be running very cold water through the grow on’s, alternatively I could tap into my return and feed the tanks via that, then tie the tank wastes into my bd run and circulate the water that way? I will be covering the pond and adding a heater of some sort for winter, very much open to suggestions if someone could look at the pics, the tanks will sit above the bd pipe run in the garage

I did think about the temps and was wondering if I branched off my return and installed the heater on this run to feed the tanks, the water temp in the tanks would be quite a bit higher than the pond but would also feed some heated water back into the pond, don’t know if this realistic or not?
idea of two tanks is so I can move the fastest growers into the second tank so they don’t attempt to eat the smallest fish

A problem could arise if you had a parasite/bacteria event in the main pond you would be transferring it to the grow on.
I have 3 tanks 2 grow on on a shared filter and one grow on/ isolation on its own system

For the list of cons and problems you will run in to. I would run separate systems if having 2 tanks do as nige has. Other than a slight cost increase and maintenance increase these are the only down side I can see to running it separately from the pond

Ok, that’s seems pretty much conclusive, so next question, what size tanks do I need volume of water wise, for say, 150 fry? Tanks are for grow on only, I will have a third out side tank to transfer them to, once it’s warm enough next spring.

Keep them separate from your main pond or you could regret it the first time you have a fish with a health issue or you buy a new fish or 5. You will need to quarantine them first for a few weeks before introducing them into the main pond.

500 gallons here
Just got to go for what your available space and budget allows for at the end of the day as long as it's a reasonable size________________________________________________

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
