New Filter
I have just purchased an eazypod complete. It will be pump fed with a 10000 vari pump .2 things
I'm considering the outlet going into basically a water butt filled with grog and filter sponges and then back into the pond. Is it a good or bad idea?
Also idiot question time . I will keep the old filter running once the easypod is installed but how long should i keep it running before i can be confident the easy pod is up to speed?
It is only a 2000gallon pond (10ftx8ftx4ft ) If i have volume calculations correct . At the moment only 6 koi between 8"and 12"

I personally think the barrel of grog and sponges is not such a good idea. It'll just fill with crud that the pod let's through and would be a pain in the bum to have to keep cleaning.
If the media in the pod is new I'd say keep your old filter running for 6 -12 months. Should give your new filter some time to mature, but it'll still be worth checking your water quality after that time to make sure your filters are doing what they need to do.

If wanting to use a barrel for extra bio best bet would be moving bed with either k1 helx13 ect least cleaning then becomes as easy as a nexus. Shut the valves turn up massive of air then dump to waste

I like that idea Johnathon.
Out of interest If i put the new K1 in a clean dustbin full of pond water add a pond bomb and run an air supply to it before i install the filter itself would this help to boost the k1 and help it lose its bouyancy?

OK the Filter system is now installed.
Pump fed eazy pod draining into a 240ltr wheelie bin with air to create a moving bed then out to pond.
I've put 50 litres of K1 in it to start how much air should i use. 70 litre pump that comes with the pod is boiling the water if all valves open full should i turn them down or leave them on full?
Will probably add another 50Ltrs of K1 later but just getting it started at present so will let this mature a bit first before adding more.

I would just throw it all in personally I can't see any advantage to half now half later unless like me it's a money thing

Yeah bit of a money thing. Spent far to much this month so need to wait until next pay day. I dare not tell her indoors how much the new filter system has really cost to get up and running. She thinks is just the cost of the eazypod and a few bits. Haven't mentioned the £150 pump £100 of pipe work another £100 in bits and valves the list goes on.
