Momotaro showers help
My pond is 4300 g
BD and skimmer are both 4” feeds to drum filter capable of 35,000lph
my filtration from drum is a 3 tray plastic shower with bhm and other copy media being pumped from drum at 20,000lph
Other outlet from drum then goes to vortex system with approx 400 ltrs aerated K1, then fed back to pond via 8000 lph pump
Im seriously thinking of getting rid of vortex/K1 system and going drum and bigger shower system ONLY..... this will give me way more space and I can lose the 4/5 air pumps running the bio stage.
The intention is to pull the maximum of 35,000 lph from drum to shower ONLY on 4300g pond.
Can anyone see benefits/pitfalls ?
I’m looking to see if anyone has got similar system to what I’m trying to achieve, any feedback welcome
cheers
Carl

Gazkoi has a similar set up to what what you are wanting on his main pond but he does have 2 showers. Hopefully he will comment.
I have seen lots of ponds running on just a drum and showers.
That is quite a lot of flow you are hoping to pull I’m not sure how the shower/drum would coupe with that.
A lot would depend on your stocking/feeding levels though.

I have a moving bed as well as my shower, but many people have showers only.
You just need to have enough media to give you surface area for the biofilm you need for your stocking and feeding levels. It’s not that easy to calculate what that volume of media actually is- so can be worth designing your setup in such a way as you can add an extra tray of BHM should you need to to get rid of your ammonia and nitrite once it’s all mature and up and running. Or just go way over the top to be sure you have enough media to cope with a massive fish load.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Way over the top is always the favoured option btw

Hi mate,
My main pond is 4100 gallons.
I have one Momataro shower running off a skinner through a sieve (soon to be replaced with a Filtreau HF30 drum via a blue eco - this is enough flow once I opened the skimmer to a total of 6 inches of pipework. The down side of this pulls the surface so much I lose a lot of food if not careful.
I then have 2 others showers (one momataro and one JBR plastic one. There are fed from a BD and tommy drain via an Oase drum. Pumps are a blue eco and EA 20k vario after a pumping chamber.
All showers are filled with BHM (I’d estimate 200kg) and I never have any water quality issues.
The main downside is the showers out a lot of cold in the water during winter and I would not feed the flow directly without mechanical filtration first otherwise you may be creating a biological time bomb.
Happy to help further if needed.
Cheers

Do you think 1 set of standard showers (80kg BHM) with good flow would be enough on their own....pond is 4300
4” BD and 4” skimmer feed into drum, then directly over shower??
ps
Ive already got JBR plastic shower with 40kg of media, that would go into new momotaro shower and sell the plastic one on

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
