How long does K1 take to sink?

New pond and combi drum. I have just put 50ltrs in and turned the air on, it's bubbling away but sitting on the top. How long does it take to sink? I have a pure pond bomb on way today. Do I add this straight into the moving bed or wait until the k1 is sinking?

    Thanks.

K1 is designed to be neutrally buoyant , you don?t want it to sink. When it?s new it will float and stack up on each other. Give it a few weeks to get a layer of biofilm and it will start to fluidise better. It can take many months for the media to become mature.

Some will soak new K1 in PP to help with the initial maturing process, I?m not sure if it has been proven to be effective but it will stain it brown.

Yes you can just Add the pond bomb to the moving bed filter. Don?t expect miracles though. I think a lot of people get the gel to add to the k1, again nothing is available as a substitute of time for maturing a filter it just helps seed it to get it started. If you are not heated it is going to take you a long time so be patient and keep on top of water quality by dilution, ensure you dechlorinate the water you are adding How long does K1 take to sink?

Sorry, what's PP? Can safely say I didn't soak it prior How long does K1 take to sink?

I know it will take a while to mature the bacteria etc. but just wondered how long before it "rolled" in the chamber. Having put it in, and I expected this, it, as you say, bunches ontop of each other and stacks up.

Should I periodically push it under to try and mix it up a bit?

Ok found it, potassium permanganate. No didn't do this and happy to let it mature as it goes.

Pond bomb just arrived so going to chuck that in now.

That?s it you got it How long does K1 take to sink? sorry should have said.

It won?t do any harm if you manually move it around but at the same time I?m not sure it will help much.

You could I suppose get a sheet of Perspex to sit on top of it to push it down and hold it under.. again not sure if it would help How long does K1 take to sink?

Did you get K1 or K+ media, the K+ will only take a couple of days to roll and should not be soaked in PP.

It was K1 I got. I didn't know there was a k+ until just now, thought it was K1 or micro.

TBH id remove, sell on and get K+ instead personally, or remove and PP the existing. The long difference in rolling time between the two convinced me there's a huge difference. Cant see much point in adding the pond bomb this time of year to new K1.

I've done it now so I'll let it roll... Boom boom How long does K1 take to sink?

I'll add another pond bomb in the spring if needed but will see how the K1 matures.

What if I mixed it and chucked an additional 25ltr of K+ in there?

I assume there is no downside to too much media, right?

Well you would think that but I believe the more you add the longer it will take as the bio film will take longer to build up across a lager surface area available. You may have been better to add half to start with and then add the other half once rolling.

I would personally just leave it now and let it do it?s work and hopefully be ready for spring..

Bio ball now or in the spring in my opinion no difference it?s still adding what it would to the water..

Now it?s just a case of being patient mate. It will fluidise and it will mature but it takes time.

Will do, thanks. I'm in no hurry. Not planning anymore fish until spring anyway and the ones already in there have survived in a lot worse up to now.
