    Hi mate,

If you are not heated you will be feeding less now due to colder temperatures and the koi will be producing less waste as a result. This will lead to less cleaning being required to remove the solids (mechanical) produced from koi. That said, trees etc.. are losing leaves currently so if there is other debris being collected then it is not only koi waste to be considered.

Water clarity, waste build up in the sieve and water parameters will often ‘tell you’ when cleaning is required.

Cleaning ratios can also be determined by stocking levels and pond size. i.e. a lightly stocked pond will stress the filter less compared to a heavily stocked. If the pond is suitably stocked then it can come down to the size of the pond i.e. if the filter being operated at its maximum capacity etc...

I hope that helps a little however there are no ‘hard and fast’ rules as there are many variables. It sounds like once per week was doing well for your husbandry in the summer months so halving this in winter could be worth trialling initially- just keep a close eye on things.

    Cheers

cheers gaz, thanks for your reply have just done a clean and as i said i could probably get away with another week so think i will do it fortnightly, all water tests are spot on using colombo test lab kit, nitrite 0.0mgl ammonia 0.0mgl kh 8 ph 8 phosphate 0.5mgl nitrate 10 mgl gh9 temp 10.2c. also doing 10% water change do you continue this throughout the year ? when should i turn off my uv? as of now there is no algae , sorry for all the questions but this is my first full year with this filter, cheers mark.

    Hi Mark,

No worries pal - always happy to give my opinion and help with product sourcing when I can.

Again the WC routine can be reduced as less waste leads to less ammonia etc... but keep an eye on the parameters.

Regarding the UV, the main job of this is to prevent the water going green from the sun. Clearly this time of year there is less sun, so can be switched on and off as required. On another note, the UV bulb will require changing periodically too.

    Cheers

No worries mate -‘yes they will be available still if not showing as sold on their as it’s normally UTD.

Adding Koi in colder temperatures does increase risk, as their immune system is not as ‘active’ and chemicals to treat in colder temperatures are not as effective at times. I will only usually sell at 12degress (or above) and subject to the customers pond / QT etc... being equivalent temperatures to mine to reduce risk as much as possible - that said, there are plenty of Koi still sold throughout winter - the buyer just needs to be fully aware.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my site.

    Cheers
