    Anoxic filtration

    Hi Guys,

Sorry, I know we've had a similar thread that RS started, but that very quickly went of subject, so I decided to start a new one.

    So questions.

Mankys article says 1 basket per adult fish. Have you followed this advice and achieved 0 or near 0 Nitrate? If not, how many have you used?

Where have you put your baskets? I was wondering if they could go in the outer chamber of my Nexus, under the swirling K1? I also have a separate veg filter, it's 60cm, 40cm, and 300cm long. It's just filled with water and fed from the skimmer and returns via a water blade. Was wondering about putting them in there?

Also can people recommend cheap places to buy the ingredients?

    Cheers guys,

    Jay

Ps, I'll be leaving my nexus' running. Pond is 40k litres, 2 nexus 320s gravity fed, and 22 fish, from 12" to 28"

Hi Jay, In case you haven't seen it, you may find some answers you need in my thread here: Washing Cat Litter For Biocenosis Baskets - When Will It End?!

The outer chamber of the Nexus will be no good for Anoxic baskets as they'll be in the line of too much air. The purpose of Anoxic is to create an oxygen free environment so the baskets need to be placed where they will not have too much fast moving water and most definitely out the way of any pumped air

Manky has made a good number of posts in the linked thread that will help you understand the pros and cons of adding Anoxic to a system with other filtration, and how to to have realistic expectations of success.

Yep, I post so much about anoxic filtration that I've begun talking about it in my sleep. My wife is fed up hearing about it and asked me if I could go back to talking about other women.

Iíve got 38 ready made ones which Iíd be prepared to sell. Half of them have been working for a year, the others a few months.
Theyíd have to be given a dose of PP Iíd suggest before use.
    Open to offers.

Are you giving up on Anoxic then BCC?

Koiz, thanks for that reply, I didn't see your thread, but wouldn't have realised what it was by the title. I'll give it a read.

I think the air ring is half way up the Nexus outer chamber, so I had it in my mind that the baskets would be below this, so just thought water flow may be an issue, but then thought that the flow through from the inner to outer chamber would be very diffused and slow by the sheer number of inlets spread evenly around the outer chamber. What is the definition of "fast moving water"?

BCC, thanks for the offer, I'd love to take you up on it, but suspect the postage would be prohibitive. I too would ask why you would be willing to part with them?

No it wasn't a very helpful title in hindsight! Unfortunately the search function in the forum is not great either, but there is some excellent info in that thread Anoxic filtration

I'm surprised the air ring is not at the bottom of your outer chamber. I only had the 220 which was at the bottom, so don't know about the 320, but makes sense that they'd be the same so that's quite interesting.

The issue with your veg filter maybe that only the surface water is being pulled through it by the skimmer so you won't get optimal water pass. I have my baskets on the shelf in my pond but quite how effective that'll be also remains to be seen. It's all experimental at the mo.

    Yes mate.
Iíve posted my reasons somewhere, might have been above.
I will get around to writing the full report of my summer woes when I get time, life and general stuff getting the better of me at the moment.

I think this is the post you're referring to BCC: https://www.koiforum.uk/water-treatment-protein-skimmers-filtration/26896-washing-cat-litter-biocenosis-baskets-5.html#post353676

What happened in the end with the flukes? Did you go in with Lernex or Lernex Pro?

On the last lot of scrapes I found some Trich (again, not many but a few is too many) along with flukes (still) so went for a PP treatment to deal with Trich.. Big water change after that followed by Lernex, Hopefully this round of treatment will finally be the end of it.
I lost one fish also and have another poorly one but heís hanging in there.
Everything within my system was throughly cleaned and drum bypassed for a couple of days.
Water parameters have remained fine which suggests my shower and clarity skimmer are working. Quite amazed by this to be honest as going from 40 baskets to 20 then to none was quite a leap.
All in all has been a rather frustrating summer and has proved to me that just because your water looks clean and tests clean it doesnít mean it is clean.

Sorry to hear you lost a fish BCC, but great that your bio is fine. Have you rescraped to confirm the all clear yet and was it standard Lernex or Pro that you used?

    Hey BCC,

Sorry you've had such a rubbish summer, it's been bad enough with all this Covid rubbish, most people with ponds have been able to take to them for salvation, but yours has been an added problem.

Hopefully thats the last of it now. Fingers crossed for you.

Koiz, I don't have any ledges to put baskets on, so it's either the Nexus or the veg filter (or nothing).

Could you sit them on the bottom of your pond around the edges? Put them on feet (like I show in my thread with the purple bottle tops) so water moves around all 6 sides. Should work providing they are not in the direct line of a powerful under water return. I only put them on my shelf as they are easier to reach!

Koiz, we are both right, the air line is off the floor, but maybe not far enough to get a basket under. You can see that the water flow from the centre comes out well about the bottom.

I wonder if the crescent shaped planters would fit in that area under the air line? Will have to look at that.

I fear crescent shape are unlikely to work well. You need to follow the Manky guide precisely to get the right zones within the baskets to allow the attraction of the molecules evenly from all sides. We are going against the principals of Anoxic by adding it alongside an existing filtration system as opposed to it being the primary filter; any further deviation is unwise Anoxic filtration

I'm also fairly sure the baskets will not fit. I tried to use a crescent basket to scoop the media out my 220 - far too big! I know the 320 is larger but still doubt it'll fit (and believe crescents are only one size?). You'd have to move the airline up also. And that may just create dead spots where your media will get stuck around the baskets and in the feet of the Nexus defeating the point of the moving bed Anoxic filtration

I wouldn't advocate interfering with the flow in the outer chamber of a Nexus.

Also, if you read my article on anoxic filtration, you will see that it's primarily intended as a stand alone system where you can expect near zero ammonia and nitrite and very low or even near zero nitrate too.

This is because it works in a completely different way to conventional (nitrogen cycle) biofiltration and destroys ammonia directly without producing any nitrite or nitrate. In that situation, it will also be able to mop up any nitrate produced by nitrifying bugs elsewhere in the pond such as on the walls and floors.

The article highlights the fact that the correct number of baskets to use is one basket per fish that will reach adult size. So, if you put a few baskets in competition with the high nitrate output of a conventional biofilter, you will not achieve a dramatic reduction in nitrate and, depending on how few baskets you add, the reduction may be so small that you may not even be able to measure it with a manual test kit.

Sorry but I wouldn't want you you to go to the trouble of making a few baskets and then be disappointed.

Standard Lernex Koiz. Iím not comfortable using ďProĒ version after discussing things with people familiar with its use.
I will scrape a fish or two before any further treatments yes.

Yeah, Pro is a pretty harsh treatment. May I please ask what exactly you were told that put you of using it? I'm collating all fluke treatment protocols in a spreadsheet to share with the forum in light of so many failed treatments this year, so your input would be very valuable Anoxic filtration
