Watch your rubber boots!
Just went into my filter house for a random reason and noticed one of my rubber boot end caps on the drum is about to fail. Well, actually it already has failed- there is water squirting out of a crack in it and a bit of water on the floor.
This is not the first time I have had boots start to crack with age, I actually replaced 2 of them this spring for this reason, but at that time this one had not looked like this! (apologies for the spiders webs, they like hanging out in my filter house )

I should check these more often, but thought I should perhaps bring this to the attention of anyone who hasn’t had it happen to one of theirs yet. It is pretty dark in my filter house by the way, no direct sunlight. Has french door but in the north facing wall.
This is why I won’t use boots before a ball valve in any gravity line, or anywhere underground.
So have just sent Simon to toolstation to pick one up- looks like I am draining down the combi drum this evening
He asked me why I don’t keep a spare and I have no good answer to that question
I should fess up and admit I don’t go in my filter house very often.
I have a pH, temp and TDS meter I can see through the door. The filters run themselves, and I have a device that texts my phone if power to the pumps from the drum panel ever goes down.

I have one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tekview-Env...BM2Q77WT1ZQ3H3
its inside a dry box and plugged into an extension cable coming from one of the drum control panel’s power sockets.
It needs a SIM card. I just got a free O2 sim and loaded it with a tenner credit a couple of years back, it’s not run out yet.
I can text it to get a report if what it’s up to as well as getting the power down alerts.
It tells me if I have a power cut, but also if the drum turned itself off for any reason such as low water level cut off. It can’t tell me which of those things caused it, but I know because i get alerts from all my cameras if the house power is down too.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Here is what it texts me.
The #01# is what I text it to ask it for a report of its status

The temperature alert system is not that useful when used for this, because I don’t care how hot it is insude a dry box in my filter house reallyLast edited by Feline; 29-09-2020 at 05:51 PM.

Good heads up!
I've used Evolution Aqua EazyConnectors throughout my new set up. The only pipe welds are either side of valves onto the pressure pipe. I've done it this way for the versatility of being able to clean all the pipework and equipment and make changes if necessary.
When I told my original pond builders that was my intention this time, they said be sure to use only EA connectors as they'll last year's longer than anything I may buy elsewhere, including the ones I'd already ear marked to use from Toolstation!
EA are definately more expensive, but I got good prices from Cascade Koi on all my connectors and valves - plus they were the only place that had stock during the height of the initial COVID lockdown. They also do triple packs on some which work out really cost effective ... and helped me build a backup stock
On my first install I had a combination of EA connectors and other brands, and I'm still using some of those original EA ones now so they're a good 4 years old. The others did just what the photo showed.
So, may be worth considering the EA ones. They definately feel different to other brands, more squidgy!
Just another thought, but do you have an amalgam that may have been exposing that connector to UV? If so that may explain its sudden demise.

I should probably add, that yes I do have an amalgam inside my drum. But, one of the 4” end stops I replaced in the spring is on the far end of the combi drum, 2.2m away at the far end, in the pitch dark, and is 3 chambers away from the one with the UV in it so is perfectly UV free!
The bung I bought to replace that one came with a nice reinforcing cross on the end of it and looked stronger than the Fernco one it replaced. I need to work out who I bought that one from and order some more from them!2016 new 6000 gallon pond

I actually think that these have failed not because of UV deterioration, but because of the amount of pressure they are under at that depth below surface level causing them to bulge outwards. These are really designed for waste pipe use in low pressure environments. I generally consider the gravity feed pressure to be low really, since it’s not pumped. But these don’t seem to deal well with it that’s for sure.
The other one I replaced in the spring was a 4” 90, cannot remember what brand that one was. It would have been approx 4 years old.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Going to have to use a toolstation cheapo one this evening because it’s all I can get quickly and if this thing goes totally pop it’s going to be beyond wet in there, eek!2016 new 6000 gallon pond

I have just read some stuff about the Fernco 4” stop ends. They can take up to 0.6 bars pressure.
Mine are 70 cm below surface level so are withstanding 1 bar
So it’s not so much that they are failing, but they were never really designed for this. Bummer!2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Gotta love Toolstation, and Screwfix for that matter. Many have been the time those stores have come to the rescue for last minute help!
It's interesting because I bought an EA 3" end cap off Ebay a couple months back as an extra defense after the slide valve on my drum dirty water drain. That came with that same cross head design which I've not seen on EA end caps before. Sure is a chunky bit of rubber. Took a lot if screwing to make it shrink enough to fit. Thought I'd bought the wrong size initially! Wonder why this 3" would have the cross when my 4" don't

I actually wonder if they have changed the design because of a high failure rate.
If you were using these on the waste pipe in a house where the pipe is usually empty they would not fail in this way. But I suppose loads of us are using these nowadays. You can’t solvent weld direct to the drums so there is no alternative.
I might be particularly badly affected because my drum is very large and deep possibly.
Will get the ones with crosses on in future though I think!2016 new 6000 gallon pond

The cross reinforcement is most definitely a lot stronger. I really hope EA have changed their design.
Not sure why but I can't view those last 2 pics of yours on the Tapatalk app. Could just be my phone!

I think you need to notify yourself as those links aren't working
You've got me a bit worried now as my QT has loads of flexi rubber boots on it 90% came from Coastal, some are Fernco and some came from various places on ebay. Good job there's no water in it yet or I'd be really worried!!!
