How often to clean Bio filter
I have a RDF in front of the Biofilter pump meaning the water being processed is already pretty clean.
I'm currently cleaning the 4 barrels (dumping the fluid) once a month and only the first static barrel looks somewhat dirty.......but really not dirty like what I have seen on YouTube........what about pushing it to 2 or even every 3 months?

Personally I have 2 vortexes full of jap mat/ fluidised k1 and the jap mat chamber picks up a small amount of much each week so gets flushed once a week.
Take 5 seconds and must be less than a gallon of slightly dirty water. Just seems better than leaving it there to fester and harbour nasties!
No need to let the whole chamber go, always turn the air off give it a stir and let it sit for 15 minutes and flush a bit as the sediment will have settled.

Hi,
I upgraded from vortex /multi bay to drum/bio only 4 months ago. Yesterday I had to let the bio chamber backflush into the drum as I had dropped part of the sensor which got sucked into the bio. I was really surprised how much muck came from the bio. I think the box section angular perforated section is trapping muck but I'm puzzled because the clean part of the drum is really clear.Has anyone else noticed this.

I’m thinking the same question I drained out my moving bed took all the k1 out and was shocked how dirty it was. I think I will do a deep clean every three months. See how it goes. But suppose it’s different for each different pond and filter
