    Shower/ Bakki media packing

What do people think is the best way to pack a shower I've a 2 level Bakki coming, 1.4m long. Standard width.

Does one pack vertical, horizontal/ transverse or just tip it in randomly?

That's 10kg in the bottom space. Will probably hold just short of 50 kg dry this way.
    Help and suggestions appreciated.

I defo wouldnt put it in as per photo as the water will track through the holes too easily. I have neatly layed mine in rows across the width of the tray

I got 20 kilo of media in my bottom tier.

    But thats just my opinion.

You’re supposed to smash it up and put in in randomly.
I gave my OH a bolster chisel and hammer and asked him to do it which I think he quite enjoyed.

    Thanks @Feline , (I'm deadly tagging now I understand the @ thing ! dob1971 4 kids <15 etc. Thanks to them)

Every video I've watched has the disruptive river bed flow idea, "Water smashing",

I'll get 50 kg and batter the "bejaysus" out of it.

There will some fun balancing the flow from this. Not to mention cutting holes in stone tiles etc.

Big thanks to Ian from Evolve filters for helping me design this.

Nice thing is, its expandable if I change the tray.
    If = when.

Just don’t smash it up so small that it can fall down through the grids inside your shower

Aye, more than one way to skin a rabbit, etc. etc.

In the following video, someone's smashing one BHM log against another (go to the 30 minute mark)

    https://vimeo.com/46673396

I suppose you could even cut the BHM logs with an angle grinder fitted with a diamond blade (a proper silicone face mask would be a necessity!), but a relatively gnarly cut/break line seems like an opportunity going begging, and would not be best-served by making a perfectly clean cut with an angle grinder.

As far as I'm aware, it's manmade, from glass, as opposed to natural pumice which is volcanic glass, but in practical terms, yes, broadly-speaking, it's quite similar in terms of porosity, weight, performance, etc.

I wouldn’t break it up over the slower tray itself like he did in the video, because when you turn the shower on you’re going to get dust and potentially some small sharp fragments come through into the pond.

I didn’t hose mine off or anything, but I did shake the dust and small bits off it before putting it in. Despite that I did see a bit of white looking stuff near each of the mid shower returns for a few days. I assume they either got taken out by the drum, or covered in biofilm and are still there on the pond floor
