    Media Mix

    Hi All,

Any Bakki users out there mix their media?

    Eg.

    Genuine BHM in tiers #1 & #3

    Crystal Bio in tiers #2 & #4

or even mix different media within each tier?

Just looking at different types of media at present and I know that genuine BHM seems to be the weapon of choice when money isn't an issue, but tbh a full system of BHM is out of my budget at the moment, however I might be able to stretch to a couple of boxes to start things off, along with a cheaper alternative to bulk out the quantity and fill each tier?

    Ta

    Hi,

So recently I purchased 70 kg of Far infrared media and had about 50kg of pumice running in a bakki shower with a lot of flow over it and parameter wise it was spot on with zero ammonia, nitrite and plants taking care of the Nitrates.

I then somehow managed to pick up 20 kg of BHM on Ebay at a steal, popped this in on top of the shower and wow what a difference. I was skeptical of the change such media could achieve but the water is absolutely sparkling now and clarity has increased a lot.

I would strongly recommend getting BHM and avoid crystal bio (loves to vanish after a while!!) and gradually fill the shower as funds allow, I am on a box of BHM a month atm!

Budget media wise I am impressed with pumice and the far infrared media but both do seem to pick up a lot more muck than BHM, this seems to self clean even though I am pumping after the filters so can only be very fine particles accumulating.

I would try and keep them separate on trays though to help you clean them out a couple of times a year.

Is the crystal not the one that brakes down and puts tiny shards in the water that irritates the kois gills ? ? I could be wrong tho so ill go back and sit in my corner

    Quite possibly.
But wouldn't the amount of water flow and the subsequent pressure from the spray bar jets in any bakki type shower over any media directly affect how long it lasts?
Running water is powerful stuff with enough time it will degrade/breakdown anything. This is partly why I asked about possibly mixing media.
I was thinking harder wearing better quality media taking the initial hit and force of the water over something maybe a bit softer (cheaper)

Yeah I would agree that it'll brake almost every thing down in time but if the crystal is the one am thinking of its the glass shards that's the worry . Some one with more experience should be along tho

    Excellent
Result..... that's what I was thinking, then maybe replace the crystal bio every now and again, before it starts breaking down? Whilst the BHM remains in place to help kick start the new bio ? or even replace with with more BHM if funds allow?
I presume your BHM is placed above the crystal?

I did have similar concerns with my flow rates and just put some Jap mat over the top and it did distribute the flow nicely and soften the jets.

Crystal bio is just very fragile and even pumice is a lot harder than it, as you say all media will disintegrate eventually just CB seems to need to be refilled in a couple of years!
