Skimmer pre filter

Hi guys, I have one of the JB Plastics (thanks that's the right name) skimmers on the pond and have never got on with it.
One of my main issues is the holes in the basket let all the pine needles straight through, so every few weeks the waterfall slow to a dribble and I've got to take the pump out of line and clear the impeller with needle nose pliers. Massive pain in the whatsit.
So I thought about how sieves work and thought I could add a fine mesh that would act like a sieve before the basket (the handle has also pulled off the basket and the basket is falling to pieces).
So you can see from the pics that I've curled the back side of the mesh up to act as a fence, but what you can see is that I've curled the front edge down. This edge is butted against the front of the skimmer and acts as a support, keeping the mesh off of the skimmer floor by about 15mm, allowing water to pass through into a void. The curled up edge at the back has been suspended by wire from the skimmer walls and is higher than the front edge so the mesh slopes up hill, I find this beaches any debris.
Anyway, it's working great, nothing gets through to the useless basket, and I just pull the mesh out and spray from the under side to clean it and pop it back in, takes less than a min to do, unlike cleaning that basket out and ultimately the pump.
Anyway, hope this helps someone.
Jay
