Dependant on the amount E.A. recommend increasing air to suit. Up to 120 L air for 150 litres of media IIRC. Personally I’d ignore their recommendations... . I’m going for 100 litres of K1 with an 80 lt air pump. (Air pump solely for Meda) Micro K1 will probably finish up back in the pond so I’d stick with Normo K1. Amazon have on prime for 52 quid next day

    Hi Paul,

When I had a Nexus 220 with Draco Drum, I increased from 50 to 100L of K1. I PP'd it all first (ie soaked it for 24 hours in about 15ppm Potassium Permanganate) as this 'etches' the surface and cleans it up to allow bacteria to colonise quicker. I then added about 5L every other day, along with some filter gel, so as not to allow the new K1 to be cultured rather than overloading the system in one go. Worked a treat.

Moving on, I now have an Oase ProfiClear Compact M and wanted to increase the media from the standard 40L of Hel X13 it came with. So I decided to do some research to compare the most well known biomedia (K1, MicroK1, HelX13 and the new Oase PondPads). Here is the summary of that research.Unfortunately I couldn't find the g/day processing data for the Micro:
    Oase vs EA Media 04.07.20.JPG

I also compared EA, AquaSource and Oase bio filter boosters:

The conclusion I came to was to use PondPads with BioKickstart Premium this time, and it's worked well, as documented in my two posts here No.85 and here No.86. This whole thread is really worth reading if you are interested in the PondPads, particularly this post #46

It's worth taking the time to watch these videos to get a better understanding of what you are trying to achieve with your biomedia - they certainly opened my eyes and helped me decide to go with the PondPads AKA Mutag, plus the footage of Rotifers is engrossing

Another quick tip, in case you do not already know this, if using filter gels, it's better to add them little and often than lots all in one go. Allow them to mix with the media for at least an hour without any flow through or air, then resume the air (not too much so as to prevent the bacteria from getting a foot on the media), and then recirculate the water, but leave any UV off for as long as possible, at least 24 hours, to really give the bacteria a chance to take up residence without being zapped by the UV!

And I agree with Spongebob - you don't need more than the 75L air pump you have now, providing it is dedicated to just your Nexus.

Hope this is helpful, and good luck
    Wendy

I use micro and standard in my bio chamber, 43L micro 50L standard. Not lost any to the pond, occasionally some manage to get into the chamber below the eazy section but not much and itís easily collected
