    Pond filter upgrade

Hi guys, first attempt at koi pond not worked well, 6,000 litres (too small) and i have an eazypod and dont like them at all because of the noise as want a quieter pond environment. Going to dig out the pond and expand to 12,000 litres by dropping a foot to 5 ft depth and widening. Want to change the filter and after suggestions, not keen on nexus or another pod, what alternatives work. told oase biomax is good?

Dont worry - weve all been there . Its called 3 pond syndrome , so you`ve got 2 more to build , yet

What exactly makes the noise on the pod ? I have one , and its only the pump that makes the noise !

You could do what Ive done and use the pod as a pre-filter , to take out the mechanical waste . Ive added a bead and a bio-chamber , which seems to work ok .

Just do plenty of research , and hopefully you might only have to build 2 ponds , instead of the usual 3

    jivemonkey,

I replaced my mechanical filtratation with an AEM Easy Drum and have been happy with it for more than two years now. One of the least expensive around and really hasn't missed a beat since I got it set up properly. There are a few good and relatively inexpensive drums out there.

    A drum - at 12,000l I’d go for a solum25.

You say noise - i assume an air pump? Wh I ch make?

Drums make some noise on the wash.

no air pump linked to easy pod.. pump goes via uv to easy pond and return pipe makes noise on way back to pond on pump fed system.

If the return is above the water, then I assume you mean splashing sounds?

If thats the case just extend the return to under the water.
Mine returns via an elbow 1 cm under the water, and its silent.

As others have said a drum filter is generally deemed the best for mechanical filtration.

If your budget doesn't stretch to that then sieves are generally seen as the next best option for mechanical filtration. There's normally one for sale on here and/or eBay, so you can probably pick a decent one up second hand for fairly cheap.

For bio filtration a moving bed bio filter tends to be the option most take. Again diy versions can be easily made to keep costs down.

Other options worth looking into are anoxic filters and also shower filters - although the latter will create noise so perhaps not the best option for you.

To keep water clear of algae, an inline uv unit, or if you have somewhere to safely fit one, an amalgam uv filter is an option worth looking into.

The quietest combo would probably be sieve and anoxic.

Finally, to keep running costs down, maybe consider using an air lift to pump your water (search on here, there's various threads about them). I highly rate them and posted how I built mine, but again the air pump will create noise. I put mine in a shed and put it inside a plastic storage box (obviously with air holes added) and it's barely audible.
