    Skimmer Advice

    Hi,

I'm embarking on a pond build and looking to purchase a skimmer. I'll be using standard hollow blocks with rebar and backfilled with concrete. It will be around 16,000 litres (3,500) gallons.

I like the idea of a skimmer that will replace one or half the size of a block (standard solid block laid flat). However, most of what I've seen will require part of the wall to be hollowed for the pipework.

The Ultraskim fits the bill and has a built in overflow, but £260 is too much for a skimmer.

    https://absolute-koi.com/prod1267.html

Are there any other similar options where the pipework will sit out from the wall and possibly have an overflow?

I just bought a construction skimmer from JBR plastics was £150 plus VAT will do what you're asking, need to put your own overflow in though still trying to figure that part out

I have a jbr skimmer, with 3” pipe to drum and 1.5 waste overflow.
my pond is hollow block with rebar but I used solid concrete blocks on there side for the top two layers.

Thanks guys. JBR looks like an option. I'll contact them and see if they ship to Ireland.

Thanks Sim. Was the overflow included or did you fit it?

    Fitted buy jbr
when you buy one from them just specify the outlet size and the fact you want a waste and the size.
they were quite helpful when emailing them.

Wish I'd have know this when I ordered mine. Think I need to drill a hole and stick in a tank connector for my overflow

They could probably send you a retro fit one, would think it would be an easy fit.
you will have to drill a hole out in the basket as well.
the pipe is threaded so you can adjust the height.
bacause it’s pressure pipe I fitted a rubber boot and then used 40mm standard waste to the the drain, if it block up I can just replace it as it’s cheap.

    Thanks everyone.

Went ahead and ordered with JBR Plastics this morning. £216 including VAT for 110mm outlet and overflow. I'll arrange shipping to Dublin myself when it's ready in about 2 weeks.

I bought a JBR skimmer when I built my pond and spent the mext 3 years sealing all of the leaks with silaflex where the plastic welds gave way. The worst place was around the 4" outlet, which is now completely held in by silaflex. Mine may just be a rogue one as others don't seem to have the same issues.

Not that it's any help but was the broken off bit still on the box or not and what state was the box in when it arrived? Looks like a DPD delivery special to me

Bits are still in the box. Delivered by GLS. I arranged shipping myself from JBR so trying to claim from courier which they're not accepting even though I purchased additional insurance.

Looking at the possibility of repairing with fibreglass, but I could be creating a world of pain for myself after it's fibreglassed into the pond. Looking like £216 down the drain.

Well if it turned up like that and as you say the bit is still in the box then it's either not been packed properly or it has had the shit kicked out of it by the delivery company so it shouldn't be down to you to be out of pocket specially if you paid for it to be an insure delivery or what ever it was.

I'll keep on top of the courier company, I've sent multiple photos. Packing wasn't great, but it's not hugely delicate either. The 6mm plastic panel on the bottom was shattered in several places suggesting it received a very significant impact, i.e. something very heavy was thrown on top of it.

Just make sure your hole saw is a sharp enough one Steve so it cuts through without burning as I made that mistake recently and smashed the side of a plastic tub. The tub was only thin and I was trying to open up an existing 3/4" hole with a 40mm cutter that was very blunt. I needed to use the edge of the existing smaller hole as a guide for the bigger cutter so was asking for trouble really even if the cutter was sharp

It sounds like you have a very good case as either the packaging was not up to scratch or the delivery wasn't handled with any sort of care.

I would be sending an email to the head office of the courier company first and if they don't offer to sort it out I'd threaten them with legal action.
