How do you measure K1 media

I have a Nexus 220 , the moving bed part only about half of it moves
do I have too much in , how do you measure the litres and how much should be in.
i bought the nexus second hand and the k1 came with it .

i have a separate 75 ltr ea air pump in it with 6 air stones running alongside the usual air line .

The obvious answer to how do you measure the amount of K1 or any media is put it in a bucket with litres marked on the side of it and count how may 10 litre bucket fulls you have. Or you could weight it using a 10 litre amount first and then weigh the entire amount you have and then divide that by the weight of the 10 litre sample. You might want some large strong bags to put the K1 in to measure it and then just remember to deduct the weight of the bags from the final figure.

You can use any reasonable sized container for the measuring but you just need to know exactly how much it holds.

If the K1 isn't boiling there could be other options like is the air line blocked partly, is the air pump actually pushing out what it should be, has the NRV been fitted backwards, is there a restriction on the air line.

Looking back at your original question you say you have a 75 lpm air pump, if that is all you are using to boil the moving bed then that sounds like it's a bit too small as an Eazy Pod with 18 to 30 litres of K1 or K1 Micro requires a 75 lpm air pump and your Nexus 220 should have a lot more K1 than an Eazy Pod has.

EA recommends a 75 lpm air pump for 50 to 75 litres of K1 in the outer chamber, a 95 lpm air pump for 75 to 100 litres of K1 in the outer chamber and a 130 lpm air pump for 100 to 150 litres of K1 in the outer chamber.

    Thanks Frimley

i'll have a look see if we have any buckets with litre marks on them , i don't think i have . i've lots of empty buckets that my feed comes in , or any scales .

maybe i can switch my pond air pump (100 ltr) for the nexus air pump (75 ltr)

Yes as frim says check the air ring they always block up a specially in hard water areas, I used to have to take mine out a couple of times a year and clean it out with a 1.5mm drill bit.
just push it into the holes and twist it.
Also if you have the bigger air pump may be an idea to swap and see if it turns over properly.
i only used a 40 on my bottom drain when I ran it, and an 80 on the nexus just on the air ring.

Swapping pumps is worth a go Steve.

As for the measuring buckets, as long as you have a fairly accurate figure even if you do it by putting a set amount into one of your old food tubs using either a measuring jug or half litre water bottles then mark the side of the tub at 1 litre or 10 litre levels. If it were me and I had a 25 litre tub then I'd mark it at 5 litre levels

It's probably better to use water to get your levels as your fun sponge may kick off if you use her bottles of wine

    Hope that makes sense lol

I like your thinking Sim, my air ring in my Eazy Pod probably needs the holes cleaning out at some time as it was second hand when I got it and I've been using it for at least 3 years now.

    Hi Steve,
I had some dead spots in my nexus 200
I was already running an EA95 air pump
After some advice on this forum - I think it was Andikoi I replaced my air ring with 10mm pipe with 2 inch air stones connected to it at even intervals.
My nexus now boils extremely well in fact I could probably swap my air pump for my ea 70 and it would still do a job.
I’ve got about 110 litres of k1 in my outer chamber.
So it might be worth looking at other options before spending on upgrading an air pump. Considering the additional cost of running it as well.
Also, some good ideas already put forward by others re cleaning out the holes on the existing pipe.
    Cheers
    Ady

    Hi Steve
if you have 6 air stones and the standard air ring, and all are clean should boil away nicely, once you checked you don’t have too much media. How old are the air stones? They block after a while And cost little to replace, so could be good to check them out and change if necessary, putting a more powerful pump on blocked stones can give problem with back pressure on the pump, so worth a check, cheers.

I was thinking the other day, what can you use to clean an air stone if it's blocking up with bio film? Or do you just bin it and buy new ones?

I use use Cillit Bang spray it on leave it a few minutes then scrub it with an old tooth bush (not wife’s, not worth the risk if she finds out)
plug it back in drop it in a bucket of water, and return to pond

Ignore this post if it’s a load of crap lol, does k1 take a little while to set in the water. Ino when I brought my pod about 2 months ago the k1 wouldnt boil at all. It seemed to take a long while to settle properly. It only started boiling properly just over a week ago. My nexus easy section is doing the same right now as I got it yday.

If it's brand new K1 it is very buoyant but once the outer coating washes off it over a few days or weeks the K1 will be less buoyant. If you stick new K1 in a water butt or large container and PP it over night that removes the outer coating then to neutralise the PP you can use some Hydrogen Peroxide or HP (not to be mistaken with brown or red sauce) I normally leave the HP in there again over night and then rinse it off with tap water and the dechlorinated water just to make sure it's removed all the HP. You can stick an air stone in and use that to give it a bit of a stir when soaking in PP, HP and tap water etc. Then it should be good to go and should mature slightly quicker than brand new K1
