Dosing pond with Sodium Thiosulphate help please
Hi, please can someone clarify how to do this and how much? I have a bag of the crystals, do I need to make a solution up first? I am doing 10% a day water changes due to a new pond nitrate and nitrite spike the last few days and have noticed my fish seem to be flashing a bit by the pumped return, despite my new water coming through a very expensive Himex filter.....
I dont have any chlorine testing tablets yet ( ordered) but thought it may be excess chlorine in the new water they dont like?
So I have approx 1800 litres of fresh water going in to the pond, how many grams of ST would I need and how to add it please?
Thanks !

https://koiorganisationinternational...de-chlorinator
According to the article above , its 1 tea spoon for every 1000 liters of water replaced - so that's almost 2 in your case . Its not as important to be so accurate as with other chemicals , as its harmless to the fish . I normally put the crystals in a small tub , add a small amount of boiling water from the kettle . Once dissolved add them to a watering can of pond water , and add to the pondColin

Sodium thiosulphate can be used to dechlorinate water either as dry crystals or made into a liquid if that is more convenient. I calculated this chart for students on my on-line Water Quality course which is designed for an international student base so I calculated it for all three major measuring systems which allows them to use whichever units they prefer. You only need to use enough for the amount of top up water that is about to be added but sodium thiosulphate is virtually non toxic unless added in ridiculous quantities so you can be very generous in the amounts added. Hope that helps.
Edit - to answer your question directly:
From the table, you need 5.4 grams (1.8 x 3 grams) of dry crystals to dechlorinate 1,800 litres of new water but you can use 6 grams if that is easier for you to measure.
Or you can use 45 ml (18 x 2.5ml) of the stock solution if you prefer.

Hi all, is this what I need to buy for dechlorinating my top-ups? Found a chemical supplier called Amertek offering this Sodium Thiosulphate Pentahydrate Na2S2O3·5H2O High Grade >99% for £9.99.
Also, they offer Potassium Permanganate KMnO4 High Quality Crystals CAS No: 7722-64-7 (Condys' Crystals) - 500g for £14.99
Amertek
UK Based – Laboratory Consumables, Chemical and Reagent Suppliers – Telephone: 01252 210 136 or Email: sales@amertek.co.uk
Both seem very reasonable, with free postage, but just want to check they are the right chemicals to buy. I am looking to clean a lot of filter equipment, some of which is 2nd hand, hence the PP, and also doing regular water changes due to Ammonia and Nitrite spikes, hence the ST.
If you can suggest an alternative source of stuff you've personally used, then happy to accept all advice.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks John, much better - do you also have a recommended supplier of Potassium Permanganate? I searched the same company's eBay shop and they don't appear to sell it. Thanks in advance.
