Lightbulb Please help me get my UV system working

    Hi all,

I'm new here and I'm looking for your expert advice

Bit of background information: I bought a house which came with a pond and there's quite a few koi in there. I know koi like green tinted water, but they've had it for 2 months now and I'd like it a bit clearer

We're using the Yamitsu Algae Master 55 watt system (see link below). There is no viewing window and as far as I can tell there isn't any safety switch.

As far as I'm aware, I should be able to place the end connectors onto the UV bulb, plug it in and it should light up? i.e. it doesn't need to be in the system for a quick test?

From what I can see, there's just a quartz sleeve in the system and the bulb slides through it, so I can't see it making any difference if I test the UV inside or outside of the system.

Anyway, to cut a long story short.. I bought all new electricals, new quartz sleeve, new UV bulb and I've plugged it all in but there's no sign of a glow anywhere? I've read there should be a glow each end?

There are clear waterproof ends covering the connectors each end, but the bulb is well and truly encased so I can't imagine any light would be visible?

I'm really confused! if you've had an algae master before or if you know a way I can see if the UV is working that would be great, thanks!

    The system I have: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamitsu-5...MAAOSwsh5bSKoh

    All help is appreciated!

Hi, I have this UV system.
If you connect everything up and switch it on whilst separate from the filter system you can see the glow down the pipe inlets but be careful not to look directly at the bulb as UV light is harmful to your eyes. It helps if you tilt the UV so you just see the reflected glow off the inlet inside wall.
If the UV is already connected to your system, you will usually only see the faint glow at each end when it is dark. I have covered with a towel in the past to try and see the glow during daylight hours.
I have found in the past that getting the pins to connect properly to the connectors can be a bit fiddly so try and check the light is working before tightening up the electrical covers.
    Hope that helps.
    Cheers
    Ady

    Hi,

    Thanks for responding!

I'm assuming there is no safety switch for this device? my UV bulb must be broke, the electricals are definitely fine but there's no light ;(

    Hi,
There is no safety switch that I’m aware of.
If you have good eyesight you can see if the filaments on the bulb are broken to confirm it is just the bulb.
Previously, the electrics have gone on mine because I carelessly left it set up with the electric box in contact with wet muddy earth and water got into it.
I’ve also had the seals leak water onto the bulb connector area corroding both the bulbs and connectors.
My uv is now inside a nice new filter house. I have new seals and new connectors. I got a second hand one off eBay to replace the electrics and it all works fine now (touch wood) it wasn’t too expensive a mistake as the original one was free with the second hand Nexus I picked up a couple of years ago anyway.
But I recommend not repeating the mistakes I’ve made to save yourself some time and money.
    Cheers
    Ady
