    Fines....

Probably been covered but thought it was best to give my setup....

How to deal with suspended fines??? I upgraded to a drum and added a wall skimmer thinking it would be the solution but still struggling with fines through the water. I did treat for blanketweed two weeks ago so it is probably still doing it’s thing and making it worse at present.

12k Litre pond, bottom drain, solum 25 drum, bead, 120 litre moving bed, shower with 45 litres of CSM media, 55 watt inline UV. Have an 8 inch ceramic air stone on top of the bottom drain with a 50 litre air pump which runs 23:00 - 5:00 daily. I also use clay once a week.

Having the drum is great but how do I get the suspended fines into it????

    Throughput probably.

1700l pond currently with a 16,000lph solum 16 as you know. Currently runs at 20 or 30% of a 20,000 lph pump, so that's 4,000 (night) or 6,000lph (day) - so 2-3x turnover.

Now I'm unsure if the old filter media is currently acting as a fines processor but it seems clear enough but looking at the pond design there's a definable vortex motion that leads eventually to the pump and to the drum. Your drum should be able to run that rate without having too much back-pressure macerating the waste on the drum mesh.

One question - how often is the drum washing?

Have you tried turning your bottom drain air off for a couple days, see if it improves?

To me the question is - is it the existing fines being recirculated or new fines in addition to those being extracted? An alternative I would try is to use a flocculant to clear and see it it remains clear. I've used a blagdon clear pond in the past - not because of it's effects on algae etc but because it's a flocculant.

I added it to try and assist thinking there must be logic behind it with airated bottom drains. Might try and switch off for a few days and see

Will grab a bottle tomorrow and give it a whirl. Then give it a week or two and see if it happens again.
