I already have a water pump in stock as well as a few float switches but going to see if the pump from the washing machine might work as well. Another friend has a plastic welding heat gun so that's going to be handy too.
you could just ask me to make you one lol

a wiper motor isn't great, turns to quickly and not enough torque , I tried one on mine that I made and it wouldn't turn the motor, I used an industrial grade 24v motor on a reduction gearbox at 8 turns per minute. and my controls allow increase/decrease in speed to suit my drum filter

few glitches that needed sorting in first few months, but now runs faultlessly for over 6 months not had to do anything other than clean a blocked jet nozzle

I can build you one from stainless steel. prices start at £800 suitable for 3000 gallon pond and 25,000 lph flow.

I built mine with a wiper motor from a Focus. I have used gears and chain from old bikes to reduce speed/increase power so it can handle the drum. It has been working fine for 20mths now.

Edit. - It is all about the gears, as long as you can gear it down enough with either a gearbox or chain and sprocket system it will move mountains.

true , but my unique design creates a lot a friction rubber seal is pushed up against bulk head wall.

I hope your chain and gearing is not exposed to pond water ,

its similar to the above but lower rpm and 68NM torque

Mine takes a bit of turning as well. Drive is via a plastic chain from a plastic sprocket on a stainless shaft over the top of drum.
Bike chain, gears and wiper motor are on outside

. From memory the drum is effectively a 120 tooth gear driven by a 20 tooth so that already reduces speed by 6 times and others probably reduce by a similar amount so around 12 times slower than wiper motor

Not a great pic but you can just about see the teeth in the centre. Whole thing is made from two 450mm drain risers. Unfortunately most of the construction pics came out too dark to use and this is one of the few that are usable.

Have you got a picture of yours ? I've used a rear wheel off a bike to make the drum shape with the mesh. It still has the gears on it

I note from the various models of RDF that they all have different lengths of drum. Rather than knock up a unit willy nilly is there a size ratio to pond volume that I should consider.

Another thing I need to consider is the wash water. I was going to use the water from the clean side of the drum but I note that some drums use mains water. Mains water would mean not having to lose pond water each time the cycle runs.

it makes sense to use pond water for cleaning and auto top up , im able to change 10% of my water this way every week.

As long as you have a fail safe on your drum that will turn off the wash cycle in the event of a float switch getting stuck or something like that and it starts constantly cleaning and draining your pond
4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass
2100 mm x 710 mm Infinity Window 32mm thick glass
2 x Aerated Bottom Drains and Skimmer
    Filtreau HiFlow 30 Drum Filter
    Bio Chamber - 140 litres K1
Bakki Shower - 30 KG Sakura Far Infrared Media
    2 x 18,000 lh pumps
Heated from house boiler through a heat exchanger
    Idealseal MS290

1, my DIY drum has a float switch if the water drops its stops the drum cycle
2, drum is gravity fed so no chance of it emptying the pond

a few times my pond overfilled draining out the 1000 litre ipc tank with media in due to my pond level dropping due to a leaking rubber boot which triggered the float switch

an idea I thought about doing is wiring my pumps to a float switch if water in the tank drops too low it turns the pumps off.

My pond is gravity fed as well and I've seen it happen, luckily I was home and caught it

I work as an automation engineer and I've seen many float switches and sensors fail in my time, so I know it is very possible to cause an issue, that was the main reason I changed from clean water to tap water.

My drum now has a fail safe on the software to stop the drum from cleaning if the cleaning cycle lasts for more then 1 minute, it stops and resets then goes for another 1 minute, after 3 attempts it locks out so it can't continually drain

    sounds very complex mate,

ive got a £3 240v trigger/timer float switch which controls my drum cycle very basic and has never failed
literally its functions are timer delay and cycle time with 2 leds to show on/off.
    brought it from china lol
keep simple less to go wrong .

Mine is a DIY drum also....well I had to put a plug on it...does that count ? 'I'll get my coat'

Seriously though, DaveJ who hasn't been on here for a while, made one of the best DIY drums I have seen.

Maybe its on here somewhere ?
